Title: Handbrake adjustment?

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone finds their handbrake comes up too far?
It seems to be around 5-6 clicks for me and doesn't feel like it is gripping as well as it should

I've only done 400km's on the i30 sofar, so I will ask the dealer when I go for its 1000km service.
But just interested to see if anyone else has encountered the same thing?

I think it was ouri30 (Bob) who discovered that the handbrake adjuster is accessible from inside the centre armrest, by lifting the mat at the bottom. Mine is glued solid so I can't confirm this.

Disc brake handbrakes are never as good as drum brake handbrakes.  The trick to getting the handbrake to hold on a car fitted with disc brakes is to push the brake pedal down as far as you can, and then apply the handbrake as normal and it will hold the car better.

Common problem mate that the hand brake is shit to begin with when you get it serviced just ask them to adjust it its really easy, take the rear wheels off and then take the rubber gromet out and find the adjuster and adjust away. or you do the dodgey and adjust it inside the car.

Well came back from the 1000km check up and the handbrake is working really well now.
Nice and tight and hardly any slip.
:)

Apart from the shudder in reverse, the car is going really really well.

Sorry to hear about the clutch problems, bit of a worry - esp with the amount of torque available with the diesel engine.  As for the handbrake, I find a lot of cars with newer multilink rear ends have sloppy bushes for comfort and noise control.  This means when the handbrake (or footbrake) is applied, the torque deforms the bushings quite a bit before they 'back-up' and go solid.  This makes the car feel as if its rolling after you let the foot off the brake pedal on a hill.  Try letting the brake off and let it roll the few inches, it holds solid (mine does anyway)  Try it on a really steep hill i think you'll find after the first few inches of 'roll' it will lock up tight.  Thats what my car feels like anyway.

My observation would suggest this is not the likely cause but rather the (as I believe) inboard drums that are used for the handbrake are (deliberately?) slack.

I've got used to it as I don't feel it's a problem unless perhaps I'm doing handbrake turns; which I sadly haven't tried for years  :o

First thing in the morning when cold I get one, yes only one, shudder in 1st. Nothing for rest of day.

Mentioned to garage so many need to take for an overnight test.
