Title: Got no hooter.
Post by: ABSi30 on August 10, 2017, 19:41:25
The horn on my i30 has stopped working. Checked the fuse in the big box behind the battery and found that the fuse had blown. Put in new 15 amp one and it blew again. I noticed that on the fuse box cover was another horn mentioned but this was a square type box type with 4 blades on it when removed. Is this one fused if so how can you tell. Thinking back to last week I went to close the boot lid and the horn started up firstly trying to find the right key and then fully on. It continued for about 8 to 10 seconds and then went off with nothing showing. I take it somehow the system on the boot lid when closed set the horn off. Alarm I thought. After this never tried the horn until today. I also take it the horn is the only one by the bonnet alarm button on the bonnet.
Before this fault found out had just booked the old girl in for service and mot. If nothing turns up will leave it for the garage lads to fix.  Or anything my typing is getting better can now use two index fingers left and right.

After reading a few posts on the search option I now believe that the horn behind the windscreen water top up is the alarm horn. Had a good look behind the bumper infront of the radiator and followed some wiring along. It then went into two covered in spaces so I take it the car horns are behind these n/s and o/s. Further looking is maybe called for. Soon be up to 100 ha ha.

I always assumed the horn was multifunctional or dual purpose, so to speak. Alarm and alert...

Must be a short somewhere I guess if it keeps tripping the fuse.  :undecided:

Trypical, just before an MOT is due!  :head_butt:

No horn is a fail for the mot.

Just a thought.
Is the alarm working.
Get in car, remove ignition key, lock door snd wait 3 minutes.
Pull lever to open bonnet and alarm should sound.
Put key in ignition and start car and it willgo off.

The four bladed box is the control relay for the horn. Take it off and check if you blow the fuse again. Of course you will not hear anything as there si no relay but check the fuse after pushing horn button. If it blows there s wiring issue in the horn relay control side. If fuse does not blow he issue can be in the relay or in the wiring which actually powers the horn. I don't know where the fuse is in the horn wiring (control or power side), but removing the relay will help to locate the issue. Could be also faulty relay. And personally I would not buy OEM relay if it is broken.

I broke (I think it was fuel pump) relay while checking them. Took horns relay to fuel pump as they were identical. They wanted almost 40€ for a new one at local dealer. Went to parts store and bought a 3€ relay. HY just made OEM relays few mm smaller so had to dremel one of the guide pins in the fuse box to get perfect fit for universal relay. You can buy a relay and dremel copy with the price of original relay and still get some change back if it turns out that the horn relay is faulty

Thanks for replies. Tried the alarm system this morning got into car and locked it. Waited a while and opened bonnet. Hazards flashed until I started car but no horn sound once started hazards went off. Looks like fault in horn wiring or horn itself.  3 weeks to service and mot with one week car off road. Thinking of getting portable air horn till then. :Good_luck:

I have hardly ever used my horn (keep it clean) Don't even know what the PD  one sounds like!

We don't have MOT's in Tassie,  but I understand over there you need it sorted..

The saga goes on. First time I tried the alarm just the hazards flashed. After a cup of tea and a pickled beetroot sandwich I tried the alarm again as described by eye30 behold it worked with the hazards flashing and the horn sounding. But the sound was not the same as the car horn so I suspected that the horn by the side of the inner o/s wing where the bonnet stay sits is the alarm horn. Not to be beaten and armed with a pack of 30 15amp fuses I pressed the car horn button the fuse blew. I then replaced the fuse removed the horn relay pressed the car horn button and the fuse stayed in one piece. Thanks to sundiz. So the horns must be behind the bumper as previously posted. So now the relay must be also suspect but can it be checked to see if it is knackered. Take your time and follow the advice given I might even crack it before mot. Will price relay and buy another jar of pickled beetroot as I emptied the jar.
                                                                 :happydance: up to now.

Have you checked the wires for a loose connection and or break which only makes circuit when relay in place.

Also as horn at front and takes all the weather, is it possible the horn connectors are  at fault or even the horn unit it self.

Are there two horns?, would both be faulty concurrently? Possibly but  unlikely.

also there are adjustment screws on the horns and you could power them individually directly but if you're handy with electrical and have a multimeter it may be worth checking the resistance first across the contacts. I'd expect it to be low but if fuses are blowing maybe one has a shorted out winding.

Of course could be a relay issue but there should be other relays of same type you could swap out in the fuse box for fault finding.

Test the horn by connecting battery voltage to the 1 terminal and ground the 2 terminal.
The horn should make a sound. If the horn fails to make a sound, replace it.
Horn Relay Inspection1. Remove the horn relay (A) from the engine room relay box.
2. There should be continuity between the No.30 and No.87 terminals when power and ground are connected to the No.85 and No.86 terminals.
3. There should be no continuity between the No.30 and No.87 terminals when power is disconnected.

Adjustment
1. Operate the horn, and adjust the tone to a suitable level by turning the adjusting screw.

After adjustment, apply a small amount of paint around the screw head to keep it from loosening.

I tought relay control and power lines were separated, but that kind of schematic actually makes sense. All behind the fuse. In that kind of system the fault might still be on the control side. It might be best to remove the relay and  and measure the sockets. On control side one should be 12V and other should go to GND when horn button is pressed.

Usually it is a wire shorting to chassis near or at the horns. It could be a horn itself. Easiest way to check the control cct from the steering wheel end, is to disconnect the horns AT THE HORN and press. If fuses do not blow, the control cct is ok. If they do blow, remove the relay and try again. Im betting the short is after the relay.

And yes as you have found, the alarm horn is a separate cct.

Many thanks for replies. Fuse blows when horn button pressed. Take out relay press horn button fuse stays intact. Car booked in for service and mot 2 weeks on Monday. If I get new relay or the garage will sort out. Will keep you all up to date. Had great sunny week on the south coast. All ready to knock hell out of some golf balls to wind down. :goodjob:

Ok as per previous advice, save some $$ and disconnect each horn and try again. If fuse does not blow, its a horn. If it does blow ,look for a chaffed wire that may be shorting.
Unlikely to be the relay. In fact, can be checked as they are interchangeable with others in the fuse box.

Car went in today for service and mot. The fault was with the 2 horns both knackered causing short. Due to high cost of replacements from Hyundai another one fitted so back in business. Instead of the usual PARP PARP now got a toot toot. Very pleased.

As the 2 horns are situated behind the grill so take all the crap thrown up.

How old is car?

As Ive said before, your cars seem to cop a lot of it compared with us down here.

Im guessing the iced winter roads are 'salted' and that's what is causing these sorts of problems ( recent one was rear callipers) .

Rumour has it , that's why the Poms were so proud of the Morris Marina, the worlds most seaworthy car.  :whistler:
