Hi, this is my first post.
I've just bought a new 1.6 CDRi i30 (my first diesel) and I'm becoming increasingly concerned about the engine rattle at low RPM. It seems to be getting worse even though the car has only done 350 miles in total. Fuel consumption and general driveability seem OK but I'm sure it's a lot louder than the demonstrator I drove. Owners here and elsewhere, imply that their cars are quiet. Oil level/condition is fine. Have I bought a lemon or am I merely paranoid?  :'(

Hi ithurt. Welcome to the forums :D

Fergie is my first diesel too. I understand your concern. The demonstrator you mentioned had (no doubt) quite some miles on it...? Yours will settle down.

Have a look at this post from another UK member, and take some comfort :)

It will improve... trust me... I'm a doctor

Now, where does it hurt...? :P

Welcome ithurt..

Don't stress (assume you have at least a three year warranty?) The diesel is noisy if you have the window open at idle when it is cold.. Most of us find our diesels very quiet once they are warm and we are cruising on the highway at say 110 or 120 kph...

This is my first diesel but is unlikely to be my last (unless a tree falls on me in the next 6 months)

Welcome ithurt

Normal noise so long as it gets quieter as the engine warms up.

For peace of mind call into dealers and ask for their opinion.

Thanks for the welcome and responses everyone.
I've been out on a 100 mile run today and I think you're right. The engine is only noisy when cold and runs fine otherwise with just token rattling under light load. Probably is only paranoia after all!
Economy is excellent and, as the computer corrects itself, it looks like I'm going to get at least 600 miles to my first tankful.  :D
Great handling and 'feel' although tyre noise can be obtrusive on some surfaces. My last car was fitted with Khumo Solus which I found to be quiet but 'squidgy'. The Hancooks handle great though.
I understand the Khumos are fitted to some i30's, anyone else find them quieter?

Shambles...
"ithurt" comes from "i - thur- t". perhaps I should change it to i-Thur-T. :P

Darlington, near Teesside. :-[
No, don't laugh! It's quite a nice place really. Handy for North Yorks Moors, Yorkshire Dales and only an hour away from the Lake District.
In fact, it's completely surrounded by better places to be!  :P

Was up your way this time last year. Well nearby - Stockton on Tees -  for a wedding.

For the grub in the evening we had pie and peas.
Really loved it and it soaked up the booze.

Pie & Peas .... Eye sounds like you were at KingsX eating at Harry's Cafe d Wheels, or Harry's Caravan as it used to be called.

Hi M8,

From what I have been lead to believe the HanKook and Khumo Solus are virtually the same tyre (The Khumos don't like course bitumen either)

Hi Dazz

I understand that they're the same company but had hoped the Kumho's would have been a quieter alternative come replacement time. They were definitely quiet on my old Xantia compared to Michelins for example. Never mind.
