Coming back from Edinburgh this afternoon along the M8, it usually takes me around 20 minutes for the 14mile journey to home, partly down to the traffic on the motorway, and also because the last couple of miles is urban.

Just after I joined the motorway I noticed a slight change in the engine tone, and my DTE readout seemed to drop pretty quickly... when I got to my junction to come off the motorway, the DTE reading had dropped 26 miles for that 12mile stretch of the journey. In case it was a regen, I drove onto the next junction - about 3 miles - by which the turn the engine tone had changed again and sounded much more normal.

I assume it was a regen that was taking place

Most likely, mine behaves the same way and idle can be a little rough as well.

I never really notice in the i40. Can't say I need to know because of the time I spend on the highway.  It would be handy to know though.

I thought the CEL flashed when this was happening? Might be mistaken (never seen it myself)

No, that would only happen when the DPF is severely clogged and absolutely needing a good burn immediately to sort it out. Those periodical regens may go unnoticed, if the driver don't know how to detect them.
