G'day all,

The good wife has been complaining about an intermittent throttle problem in the i30.

I had spent a fair bit of time driving it to try and experience it.

Yesterday I finally did, 3 times most times either when going into a corner. The engine just seems to go to idle. It can be fixed by releasing the accelerator. Then the car goes just fine again.....

I'm assuming some sort of fault with the throttle body or a sensor?

Any ideas?

That can happen if the brake switch is a bit dicky. If brake lights stay on while trying to accelerate it wont respond. Then will override if throttle pressed again.

Try it out while driving (on a quiet street of course) and see if its the same.
Drive as normal with foot still on throttle, with left foot apply the brakes enough for brake lights to come on, but not enough to start braking. You will feel the rest happen.

The other thought i had was Diesel bug. It blocks the second fuel pickup sock in the tank and can cause random drive concerns.

That's a bit intriguing.  I didn't realize the brake light could effect the throttle response . . .  (maybe I'm just uninformed)

The wife did mention the brake lights staying on when she parked the car one day, so I'm guessing the brake switch might be the issue.

Does the brake switch throw fault codes when it does this? Or does the car take think it is operating as a override for a stupid driver?

Is there a specific addative I can throw in the tank just in case of diesel bug?

Switch is a good possibility. Or make sure the rubber stopper for the brake light switch is in place.
I did have a particularly difficult case where it ended up being brake master pushrod fork binding on the crossbar in behind the aircon box. Had the dash out 3 times for that.

Went in today, It appears that the stability control needed recalibration.

Said they would have it done by 10 and it was done by 9:30, I just had enough time to drink 3 cups of free coffee.  :D

Wife just rang, not fixed.

Couldn't see how the traction control would keep the brake lights on....

Excellent, another trip to Hyundai

Went today. The car repeated the fault doing a uturn at the lights just before the dealers (excellent I think, might make a fault code for them) Wife was picking me up (but she was 'just going to...') so I had a bit of time to kill (Coffee count :1, offer of free fruit cake rejected with thanks).

I was lucky enough to see my car drive out and return a (very) short time later.

The Wife picked me up and some time later I got a text suggesting my car was ready. About the same time an invoice comes through on email containing my favorate words 'Tested, no fault found customer to monitor'. Lucky they sent me this email, because I was able to avoid returning to the dealer to pick my car up and explode. I have monitored the fault, and as much fun as wasting time driving to the service centre is (and how nice the free coffee is), I want it fixed, this is my Wife and Kids were talking about....

I have suggested that since this is the second time I have taken it in, and the second time they have not fixed it, and since they have no idea what is wrong, perhaps they might consider replacing the brake light switch, as it seems to fit most of the fault symptoms, and it's $30 cost is a small price to pay to rule it out.

Since typing the above I have picked the car up. Since I politely but forcibly put my case, somehow they realised that they didn't disconnect the battery last time to clear fault codes, so they did that and blow me down the code for brake switch returned, so it was replaced....

Leaves more questions than answers, like why you would ignore said fault code last time and recalibrate the stability control. Having done that why you would not reset and check there were no fault codes before returning the car to the customer. Then this time why you would again ignore the fault code, especally when on both occasions the customer has indicated that they believe it could be the source of the fault......

Anyways, brake switch is in now, so let's hope it solves the problem.

Awesome - shame it took so long.

Maybe your guys could make our guy a job offer :whistler:

That can happen if the brake switch is a bit dicky...

2 days and counting.....I'll be taking it to work for 4 nights from tomorrow. If it makes those 540k without issue I'll start to feel confident.

Drove the car over the weekend, No sign of the loss of throttle but the traction control light still comes on, and the brake lights stay on on occasion.

Placing my foot under the brake pedal and lifting up seems to rectify the problem.

The mat thing that hides the under dash workings has been catching on my left foot, and I have refitted it properly so hopefully the working of the brake pedal has been affected on occasion by the ill fitting mat thing.

Driving it tonight, hoping that this is the final fix....
