Hi,

So I have a 2009 i30 with a 6 speed manual gearbox, where unfortunately the other day the 6th gear went. Am looking to buy a replacement gearbox, and have found some good options on eBay (which are in the region of £300 rather than the £900 quoted by my local gearbox specialist to sort it out). But all the options on eBay are for i30 models from 2012 onwards.

I know that i30s from 2012+ look different on the outside, but I was wondering how different they are on the inside, and whether there would be any compatibility issues in trying to fit a newer gearbox into my 2009 i30. Any thoughts?

Thanks

You need to get the model number off the gearbox and work from there. It should be fairly visible on the top of the bellhousing.

You should find it is M6CF3-1, which was installed in both FD and GD models with the TCI-U2 engine.

Is same gear ratio used for all engines..? The FD U2 was 115 or 128 HP and the GD was/is either 110, 128 or 136 HP in different markets and MY...

Asterix , i can't honestly say.  But as i owned a 5 speed the a 6 speed FD's CRDi's  the first few gear ratio's in the 6 speed the same as 5 speed, but the main advantage i found with 6 speed, was between 4th & 5th on 5 speed the was a larger gap , like if you look at how much the engine rev's changed when you shifted 4th to 5th, with 6 speed.  4th an 5th are closer then 6th about the same. you won't get the engine revving much lower at same speeds ( mph or KPH ) between the five speed & the 6 speed when both in top gear i think might only be about 200 or 300 rpm, that was in FD they seemed to use same diff ratio. i can't say what diff ratio is in GD. i was was very happy with both the 5 & 6 speed, just thought driving in mountains on twisty roads the 6 speed was better.

Id definitely try to stick to a gearbox from an FD. Like asterix said, keep in mind the HP of your model as well.

I would have liked a 6 speed, but the 5 speed has never let me down towing. I still love driving my FD more than the partners GD
