Last day of 2016 and my 2009er is showing the first sign of her age. The little black panel against the door's window rubber just ahead of the triangular window is showing signs of stress with the plastic developing a crease parallel to the rubber (poor design). Any idea what this is called?

I believe it is called the little black panel against the door's window rubber just ahead of the triangular window.
AKA this thing.
You're welcome.   :D

Was the film exposed ?

Is this the SWB or LWB model? If you remove it, it will have both the part number and name on the inside. I've noticed with mine it warped at the top and no longer travels flush.

Wagon will be different as the rear doors are different

Thanks, I'd acrually hit upon that part number this morning but needed some correlation to know it was right since the parts listings didn't include illustrations. Having seen the part removed, do you think

a. it's easy to remove and replace, and
b. a crack in the part could be repaired using some backing and glue?

I spotted US$5.20 as a price so not a biggie to order online or try a dealer for a new one, I guess.

Open the wallet, I can't see glue working or looking good plus the heat etc etc. Here's some shots.

Held in by 3 self tappers, maybe heat, thin plastic and the tension on the screws causes this to happen?

pretty sure the internal trim is just clipped in and then 3 self tappers removed and it's off.

While Mrs Gonz was test driving the new Elantra SR, I asked about this part (LHS rear window external C panel / trim) and it came to over $30  :crazy1:

I'm hitting the online and wrecker networks before committing to that!

Toying with the idea of improving this part's durability, I wonder whether some kind of fully sick badge could be stuck across it to stop it flexing, bending and snapping away from its desired location. Probably needs to be something airflow friendly so as not to contribute to wind noise. :whistler:

Oh, oh, how's this for a fix?

Some glue along the back of the crack and then fit this to the outside of the panel.  :whistler:

Won't come any cheaper! :happydance:

@tw2005 , I'm looking at the internal panel that 'just clips in' but I'm not at all sure in which direction to pull to remove it without breaking it. Can you recall how?

I'll leave it to you to work out the engineering principles to do this better than I did but I'll suggest gently at the bottom and place your hand when doing the top so it does not snag suddenly as mine did apply too much pressure at once.

Fortunately I have a car full of spares but I'm going to have a beer, a Bex and a lie down to get over it.  :crazy2:

Don't know whether to laugh or cry.

You're a martyr to the cause, mate. :hatoff:

From the look of the metallic spring and plastic mechanisms screwed into the posts, I can surmise the only safe way to remove it is to pull directly away from the door surface ie perpendicular to the plane of contact. :victory:

I found this today after getting back from Adelaide. It proved to be a good clue to how to get started removing the dreaded c panel. :goodjob:

The Gonz has a fixation with the little triangular plastic panel in the rear door (I think that is what he is referring to...)

Job done.

When I freed the C panel from the rubber surround, its leading edge had completely split away at the depth of the rubber channelling and was being held in place, at freeway speeds, by nothing more than a thin ridge of that same rubber window channelling. Superglue, cleanup with a blade and a wrap of identical looking vinyl from a black star left behind on a kid's bedroom wall (see example image) and total outlay was $0.00. :D
