I'd tap any nearby 12V wiring source to generate 3A of new USB power ($1) and add a charging receiver pad to you phone (another $1).  The most expensive item is the charger pad itself ($13), and I'd study your car's layout for how to build it in, probably under some thin black foam in a tray to stay invisible.

I tried a commercial car charge pad and matching smartphone adaptor in my Niro to use with my Samsung Galaxy A3 phone. The receiver was a small round and very thin pad permanently plugged into the USB socket on the phone. The pad then slipped inside the rear of my phone case.

The USB plug proved to be a vulnerable projection from the phone which is easily knocked and I became concerned that it would eventually damage the socket.

With some phones you can hide the receiver inside the phone - but the A3 cannot be opened easily - the two halves are glued together.

So I junked the gadget.

The one addition to the car that has been very successful is the GPS speed HUD

(The cheapest addition I could suggest for you is a couple of golf tees to rest your balls on).

Well, here's my thinking up to now:

I can buy a DIY charger to sandwich into the black foam liner I already have in the centre tray:

and I can buy this receiver matching my Acer Liquid Z220 (USB2 B):

I take your point about protrusion, Alan. My phone's case features generously thick edge protection as this similar product suggests, which should result in a sufficiently recessed socket, so I'll give it a try.  :victory:

I changed the settings in my Ioniq to disable the smart charge pad, as the manual says not to allow any "sensitive" materials to be in close proximity to it, examples being credit cards with smart chips.

That's interesting on two counts. That you can disable it and don't toss your wallet in there!

Thanks for the heads up, Steve!  :goodjob:

Do they give any reason for it ?

I ask as I have a concealed compartment in the back of my phone case where I keep my credit card and licence, neither (to date) have suffered any i'll effects with the wireless charging.

Well, I had a spare half hour this morning and it's done.

I started with a charging pad I picked up as a freebie at a local conference, looking like this:
ns

I then cut and sticky-taped sandwiched layers of packing box cardboard as its surround to create a rectangular flat bottom for the tray between the cigarette lighters, matching the thickness of the pad:
ns

Once the pad was securely encased in the cardboard (with the surface of the pad still exposed), I then 'upholstered' it in a small piece of fine black lens cleaning cloth I'd forgotten I had in the car:
ns

With the included black USB cable neatly and invisibly routed to the inside of the centre console and connected to one of my nifty $1 USB 12V-5V3A modules, the job is done and nobody would even guess that there is a wireless charging station built in.
ns

Now to await the arrival of my $1 charging receiver to start using it. Total outlay: $2 :happydance:

As a dedicated Health and Safety guru I should point out that whilst the modification is impressive - to introduce into the car, layers of non-fire-retardant material such as packing box cardboard - especially when it forms the enclosure of an electronic device of unknown origin - is a hazard. You should now post in the car a clear warning sign advising occupants that they may be travelling in a fire trap.

The installation of a CO2 or Halon fire protection system in the car should also be considered.

Furthermore, my recommendation is that you design and install ejector seats for the car - which for a man of your talent should be a breeze - even if restricted to a budget of $5 each.

This week in Adelaide helping run a conference, I'm spending time with Mrs G and her new PDSRPrem. She suggested I try my government furnished freebie iPhone on the Qi station and of course, being a lowest-bidder procured 6, didn't charge wirelessly. She then remarked how her Samsung wouldn't either due to the thickness of her phone case. I said " Really?" pointing to her phone sitting on the charge mat beside an indicator showing charging was occurring, not to mention the cool expanding circle overlay on her phone screen.

Oh, Gerard, your ECP reference is indeed prophetic! :crazy1:

Come January I go back to Adelaide on promotion to take up a CENGR role. I'll be swimming in the ECP space once again.

An interesting side story is today when one of my colleagues heard I had wireless charging. He asked how much it cost me. When I said "about $6 all up", he said "I want it".

Looks like I'll be ordering more eBay bits. :happydance:

Are they still the same as the double lights in the GD with sunglass holder :undecided: if so they pop off easy by edging your fingernails underneath from inside the sunglass compartment as my picture shows.

Thanks, Craig, they're easy but the visor lights are flat inserts in the ceiling material with no edge to grab. They're smaller versions of the flat and flush dome light.

Ah! in that case they should have a small clip area that you can pop a plastic pry tool into, something like my dome..only need to pop one side and it comes away.
