Title: i30 Clutch problems now not starting....
Post by: Johnniedee on February 15, 2022, 13:07:20
Hey,

Sorry if this has been asked multiple times in the past! I have seen a few posts but nothing exactly what I am looking for....

I have a 2015 i30 1.6 diesel which I had in for an MOT and full service 2 weeks ago, last week I noticed the car was struggling to start a bit but I am in the middle of moving house so put that down to the cold and fact it hadn't been used much for a few days! Then 3 or 4 days ago I noticed my clutch was going almost fully down without the usual resistance that you'd feel also the bite point was very low and gear changes could be quite difficult, however, this seemed to sort itself out after a few miles. Fast forward to 48 hours ago and when leaving for work my car wouldn't start....it tried but it's like there is not enough power in the battery, I tried putting it into gear with the car off which was tricky then I tried starting it which made the car lunge back as if the clutch wasn't pressed!

This is a bit of a lazy post as moving and renovating the house is taking up so much time add to that a very pregnant wife.....so I am hoping someone has had the exact issues and can tell me a quick fix. any ideas or suggestions welcome

Thanks

I meant to add that in the MOT they replaced the rear pads and discs, could the clutch be needing bled after getting the brakes done?

What you describe seems consistent with some loss of integrity in your clutch fluid system, including it getting so bad that the car won't start. I wouldn't expect messing with the brakes to affect the clutch, unless they got it wrong, cracked open the wrong system and then didn't leave it as they found it.

Either way, you're going to need to attempt to bleed the clutch system just to check for leaks, bad seals, etc.

My 2015 diesel was losing hydraulic fluid, the reservoir is shared by the brakes and clutch. There was also a small wet patch of fluid on the plastic tray under the engine. I found that the flexible hose connection to the clutch slave cylinder was loose, allowing fluid to leak. The clutch uses a concentric slave cylinder which is buried inside the clutch bell housing, it has a plastic arm which pokes out and the hose clips onto it. It is retained by a spring clip which had broken. I replaced the o-ring which seals the connection with one from a set of mixed o-rings bought from a DIY chain for about £2. I used cable-ties to strap the hose onto the clutch pipe, so far it hasn't leaked any more. I bought some spring steel wire with the intention of bending a new retaining clip, but haven't gotten around to it yet considering the cable ties are still doing a fine job. If the slave cylinder is leaking, expect to see fluid seeping out of the joint where the bell-housing attaches to the engine. In my case, that area was bone-dry

there's a rubber bellows over the piston end of the slave cylinder if you roll that back and there's fluid under it the bucket in the slave cylinder is leaking. Just had mind replaced after noticing loss of fluid from the reservoir and same wet spot as you mentioned.
beware thou according to the local dealer in april 2022 there is a shortage of master cylinders in Australia if you were wanting to change both master and slave
