Tyre is 6 years old and have 5mm tread left.

At last MOT the cracking was put as an advisory.

MOT due in 3 weeks.

Before the MOT I intend to visit local tyre shop for their professional advice but before I do was wondering what  fellow members think.

That amount of visible cracking says perished rubber to me. Even with the supposed security of a steel belt, it can work loose and do more damage than just the blowing of the tyre. Get rid of them.

True, I often replace my cars before I replace the tyres. Only bought about 2 new batteries in my whole life!  :snigger:

Yep.
New ones due.
It looks like a severe case of ozone cracking to me.
Does the car spend a bit of time parked in the street in or near an industrial area?
Ozone is a heavy gas and if it is present, tends to find its way to the lowest point, like a gutter.

I've never seen such a severe case though.
So more likely just rubbish tyres. (Hope they're not Goodyear  :-[).

Hi,
Just replace it. It is your safety and safety of people you driving at stake.
I had this same problem with my Hankooks. After 5 years they crack like mad.
Replaced them with Michelin Crossclimate - much quieter

Ok ok great feedback.

I'm cracking up with all the wise 'cracks'.

Update
Been to 3 places today.

2 tyre only shops and 3rd garage my brother uses who do every aspect of car maintenance plus mot's.

Tyre shops divided but garage was more forthcoming.

As they do mot's they got tester to look for me.

He said 1 was on borderline and the other ok, didn't post picture of that tyre.

Said due to new mot rules looking at the 4 as a whole he would be minded to probably place as fail due to the added strain on the 4 but in particularly that 1 tyre in a  emergency situations.

So booked in tomorrow for 2 new Davanti tyres same as i bought 18 months as i'm pleased with their use.

So now do i put new on back or front as reading online it seems mixed.

The official position is new to rear.
However you'll find plenty of experienced tyre people who'll say new to front.
TBH, if the other two are only 18 months old it won't make any difference.

Personally, it's always new to front for me.

Depth on fronts showing 5mm.

May see how they feel then move in week or so

I can't imagine you being a hoon Lester, so I doubt it will matter too much.

BTW, don't think you responded to my comment about a similar issue with your FD tyres. Was I right or am I imagining it?

8mm new. Replace at 2mm (recommended).
So they're half worn in 18 months?

For safety better tyres (more thread) should be always in the rear. Loosing control of the rear is more dangerous than little understeering. For rear wheel drive cars it works great as the better tyres wear out you just change them at some point and the tyres wear out evenly.

With FWD cars the situation is a bit different as the fronts do all the braking and acceleration. They wear out lot faster. There you have to put better tyres to front to get even wear to the whole set. It is ok if you have good set. But if you are trying to go with the barely legal limit with the thread, then better tyres in back in FWD car too. And it is not just the thread. Age plays a big role also. 6 year old tyres are going to be pretty much useless if you compare them to new tyres.

How often you rotate the tyres in general? I live in a place where the rotation of the tyres is unnecessary as we have to use two sets of tyres anyway, so the rotation happens by itself.

There was going to be a law that TMPS would have been mandatory in new cars and TMPS light would have been MOT failure. Luckily that one did not go through as that would have been expensive and put us in uneven position compared to other EU members in warmer countries. Those TMPS sensors are expensive. And in some cars you would have to visit dealer to get the tmps calibrated to your other tyre set.
