Just this past week i've noticed a very low tingling type noise when air con is on.

If i switch it off and just have non air con on then no noise.

At first i thought it was the radio/music but when that is off it is still there.

When we had the really warm weather 2 weeks ago I noticed that when air con on the coldest setting the air being circulated was still warm'ish.

Data
Car 7 years old.
Air con never been recharged.

So i was thinking air con needs service/recharge.

Any other thoughts gratefully received.

Ps
No gurgling.
No screeching.
No popping.
No loud noises like bearing noise.
Air con filter which is 12 months old has been checked and clean.

Putting 2 and 2 together Lester I get 4.. So if it were me I'd be getting it tested. Bit hard to diagnose accurately from the other side of the world!   :undecided:

That can happen if you enjoy the music.

Well no further forward.

Been to 3 garages and each gave different answers.

The best i've had was from the hy dealer who did my service last week.

They say no obvious leaks but will need to do pressure test.  But this is only done as part of a regass and not a stand alone.

Also, cost!!!!!!!
As new refrigerant, y-1234, it is 3x more expensive than the bog standard stuff.
Bog standard circa £60
New stuff £160.

All said that if refrigerant get too low or none, the system will switch off.
Is this correct?

I take exception to this as... I do a full cost analysis on what i want and what dealer and indy will charge.

The hy dealer offer for cars out of warranty 3 levels of the hyundai esenstial service which includes mot AND 12 months breakdown service.

Depending on which one you want the cost is £139.00 to £200.00

An indy for same service was circa the same but without the breakdown.

Breakdown cover as stand alone is £150.00

So i actually save!!!!!!!! As i don't need to buy breakdown cover

Depends whether you go via a cashback site (Quidco/TopCashBack) as that can almost halve the cost depending what promotions they have running.

Mate, with respect to the dealers who see themselves as honest and efficient. Get their colleagues to lift their game.
The complaints come our way ( tw and me), some bizarre out comes . Lester needs our advice as to the truth of his dealer's story on aircon. Why?
On going issue of PD warm start etc etc.

You dont want me to comment, dont ask me to advise.  :disapp:

You were having a go at Lester as well as hitting the dealerships. All in the one sentence. That takes some skill.

Ok will try to be reasonably tactful.

@Shambles   @Dazzler  @tw2005

First up, (with less tact) I can never take Lester seriously. My flippancy, influenced by Polish vodka, went astray (I am on holiday); but his query WAS properly addressed. It would seem he did not trust, or more likely, couldn’t understand the advice given to him by this dealer. He simply found offence to suit whatever his head entertains.

Last night I responded briefly and less tactfully than I should have. I had spent the morning at Auschwitz; it was 5 degrees and raining, then I did a 4hr drive to a place the GPS shouldn’t find, another hour with a printed Google map to find our apartment; then I had wifey grizzling because I spend so much time here.

Main issue:
This I believe is a car OWNERS club. The dealers do not participate, even when invited. They have a well-rewarded function, that is to supply, advise upon and service said vehicles. As a Techie, my primary obligation, as I see it, is to assist the members; not to condone or ignore dealer malpractice. That is an industry obligation, one that has been blatantly overlooked during the PD warm start debacle.

I admit that I am more vocal than my colleague, but I notice Gerard is also advising members to find independent mechanics, rather than go to a dealer. This not to say that good dealerships are not operating; it simply reflects the vast amount of overcharging and incompetence that we witness.

The Techies:
Since Gerard and I have been providing assistance to the members, we have written countless pages of hopefully succinct advice usually accompanied by Gerard’s photographs. The areas we both are able to cover are mechanical as well as electronic, this seems fairly unique.

Together we have worked on many issues including the FD steering rattle, caused by a degraded $5 rubber bush. Full details of repair and pricing ($240) are now available to members and others. Consequently, the dealer scam of a full steering column replacement at an outrageous $2000+, seems to have ceased.

The re-occurring blow out of the i30 diesel front crank seal remained a mystery, both here and in the USA. Many amazing, often ludicrous theories existed. Gerard and I worked to assist a lady in Australia with this problem. We came to suspect that the issue was caused by damaged crankshaft thrust bearings. With the help of a hands-on independent mechanic we established this to be the cause.

We now know the cause of a transmission rattle emanating from the new DCT. This will be a future issue for owners with this type of transmission. Questions I asked of dealership and dealer employees were ignored. It was collaboration with an indi mechanic that gave a clear answer. Again, this is now available on our search engine.

To Conclude:
I know Gerard personally, he is a top bloke. He and I give many hours of our time freely while also working at our full time jobs.

To work out how best to deal with a fault can take hours of research. Yet it is rare that a recipient of our advice will thank us, or even more frustrating, will not give us feedback.

Personally, all of the above colours how I comment, also every alleged slip of the tongue. If it does not suit management or offends the sensitive kicking squad, then I will move on. Cheers Gary.

Update

Aircon has been sorted by the hy authorised service dealer.

Last week went to 4 other indy's and aircon specialists.

None would commit to saying what they thought the issue was.

Ranged from top up but was unsure!!!! To the motor  and or condenser required replacing!

Due to the 'new' refrigerant, 1234, the price varied considerable even those who were suppose to be specialists in their field.

The ONLY garage to give a best guess prognosis was the hy authorised service centre who gave me all the options including the worst case scenario.

So today they did the business.

Removed old stuff which they said was low, did pressure test and recharged.
No leaks evident.

Soon as i got in the car and turned aircon on the sizzling wasn't there plus the flow of air was considerably cooler.

told to see how it goes and any issues get back to them.

In my opinion the dealer was way above any indy.

Ps
Price was slightly less than they quoted at my service 2 weeks ago, as a valued customer, and less than indy's had been quoting.

Good result Lester :goodjob2: I expected low refrigerant to be the culprit but without seeing/hearing very hard to comment, possibly a dry seal caused the leak allowing the gas to evacuate but not big enough for oil loss :undecided:

Try to remember to run the aircon once a fortnight (even in winter) for 5 minutes to keep seals oiled up.

So what is the new refrigerant? 134A should be the standard I believe, which was much more expensive than the superseded R22

I don't think we have that refrigerant here yet that I've noticed, I'll have to check some of the new cars to see.
