Genuine GD Tow Bar Installation Details

Just finished installing a genuine tow bar to my GD i30 and thought i would share my experience:

All up it was not complicated by quite time consuming.

To begin the tail lights and rear bumper need to removed followed by the now exposed impact bumper.

I needed to drop the rear muffler and charcoal canister to gain access to both chassis rails. I then needed to enlarge the rear hole in each chassis rail to accept the bolt for the tow bar mount.

After bolting up the tow bar install long nuts to the charcoal canister mount bolts to allow the canister to be lowered then secure the park sensor loom to the tow bar with cable ties before cutting a slot in the rear bumper valence then refit the rear bumper.

The loom is pretty much plug and play but the power feed is via a plug that fits into the fuse driver side fuse box and runs along the sill to the rhr tail. The power for the revers sensor cut off relay is from the plug fixed to the LH C pillar accessed by removing the trim piece that also surrounds the tiny rear window.

The loom needs to traverse the rear of the car which requires removal of the back and side rear trim pieces . It is fixed to the rear of the car with adhesive mounts and cable ties.

Having now completed the task my view is the couple of hundred dollars the dealers charge for this fitment is worth it .

Good result :goodjob: sounds like a right PITA to fit though.

The initial outlay and fitment costs maybe reduced even more if done through a towbar specialist compared to Hyundai dealers :undecided:

You probably did a better and more careful job than the dealer. When they installed my tow bar on my CW, they scratches around all tree clips in the boot when they were taking the plastic trays out to connect the wiring harness, hacked the plastic protector under the car as well, so no care taken.

Also they removed the gromet to feed the cable through rather than putting a hole in it and run the cable through.

After being quoted $1200 by the local Hy dealer a few weeks ago I ended up going to Pedders who supplied and fitted a Hayman Reese towbar for almost exactly half that.

It pays to shop around..

I've bought a second hand towbar from a wreckers, it seems to have all the wiring and everything but i couldn't find the bolts! Called them up and they said they had no idea about them.

Would you be able to tell me how many/what bolts i would need to mount it?

I've just fitted my own towbar (vertical removable) without bumper removal and using a DEDICATED wiring harness plus extension kit for fridge etc in caravan(13 pin euro socket)  There were 3 bolts each side that bolt to chassis pre drilled already and once they are on you bolt the frame to these via 2 bolts each side,so 10 altogether.Shorter bolts for bottom part x4.

6 M10 x 40 x 1.25 Bolts & S/P Washers
4 M12 x 40 Bolts, Nuts & S/P Washers

We bought our GD Tourer at 24k kms - really handy to already have a genuine tow bar installed, but it might explain why we had so many issues with non functioning reverse sensors that needed repairs -unfortunately I had to rely on Hyundai dealer themselves given the car was still being serviced by them, and following that their shoddy work still required me to re fasten one of the sensors. Anyway by the sounds of this installation I can see it's not always a plug in job ...

The Main Dealers just normally let local Towbar fitter do the work and they do not make towbars themselves,so as long as it's type approved and dedicated wiring harness the warranty stays intact if you self fit or let a towbar company fit( not many fitters have  any "qualifiication")  They sometimes even do it the cheaper way and tap into the rear lights by splicing wires and using bypass relays etc this actually will invalidate any warranty if linked to problems and your car does not know it is towing,so always pay for dedicated / vehicle specific wiring.Main dealers just use same  suppliers and get their emblem on box and use their own specific  part no etc when in reality it is exact same as say ECS etc
Fitting yourself is more satisfying and you know it is done with care

So with the wiring. I had to buy a kit from hyundai but they don't normally sell them on their own. I called their local parts distributors and told them a bit of a fib. I essentially said that a customer had fried his towing harness and i needed a replacement kit. After going to a throw with them they gave me a part number for it. The kit came with all the instructions and it was easy after that. Not cheap though at 250odd dollars.
