Hi, looking for a little help or information as I've read a few threads that suggest problems with the transmission in the 2010 diesel motors. My car has just over 51,000k's on it & in two months we've gone from 'there's no problem' to an internal failure in the gear box. Looking at over $4000 for replacement. I have the car booked in for a second opinion at a place that specialises in auto transmission to see if they can pin point the problem as the Hyundai dealership was unable to do that. Also considering contacting Hyundai Australia & fair trading as although the car is out of warranty it has low km's, especially for a diesel. Any information would be really helpful, thanks

Can you tell what kind of symptoms the gearbox has?

Older automatic transmissions had issues with faulty valve bodies. Several stories here at the forum where the valve body was changed during warranty. If I remember correctly many had issues while going from D to R or vice versa. After putting the lever to R the transmission seemed to take a second before the gear went on. Some sort of lag between the lever and gearbox.

Thanks. That was my first indication. Bought the car in 2013 with just under 30,000k on the clock. At the first service I said it was slow to pick up reverse but was assured there was no issue. Both husband & I felt that the gears occasionally slipped when accelerating to overtake so I mentioned it when it went for its 90,000km service 2 months ago. They couldn't see any problem (and nothing out of the ordinary on the onboard computer) so reset the transmition to factory values & said it may take a while to adjust. The car was a nightmare to drive from that point on. Lower gears either no power or surging & high gears revving out (suddenly jumping up to 5000 rpm instead of shifting between 2500-3000) Service centre called me (just as I was about to call them) to say that they hadn't changed the transmition fluid in the service & I had to bring it back in Monday. I asked if the car was ok to drive as I was travelling around 500km that weekend. They assured me it was fine to drive, it was not a fun drive at all but once I was there I had to get the car home & the car never overheated or had the engine light come on so we just drove cautiously. Car went back in on the Monday & despite finding metal shaving in the trans fluid they still said there was no problem & again reset factory values. Lower gears were better but still having same problem with the top gears. We moved ares so had to take it to a new dealership where again they found no ploblem logged on onboard computer but after a test drive have diagnosed internal failure of gear box

Hi Phoebe,
Welcome and sorry to read about your problem.
Unfortunately, many dealerships (for any make of vehicle) are only equipped to sell cars and do basic servicing. You can do better with a reputable and experienced mechanic who will also charge you a lot less than the dealer.
In this case, I would check in with some transmission specialists.
The i30 transmission is quite trouble free. However, (as Sundiz has indicated) there were some transmissions with valve body faults. Apparently it is caused by poor solder connections. Not a big deal if you understand electronics.
It fits the symptoms you describe.

As the other fine gentlemen have said, really sorry to hear about your troubles.  Do you have any written records of where you reported issues earlier in the piece? For example have you kept any service receipts that say transmission fault tested and fault not found or anything like that? What I would do is send an preliminary email to Hyundai Australia documenting the course of events as you have outlined to us and include copies of any old paperwork mentioning an issue. Explain you are getting it checked by an independent transmission specialist, but don't start forking out big $ until you get a reply from hyundai.

If all attempt for financial assistance are denied there are cheaper options than the dealer fix apparently. Keep us posted.

Let see if I red the numbers correctly.

You bought the car 2013 with 30 000km?
The car has now 51 000km?
Car was in 90 000km service? (The car has only been driven 51 000km) Or was this service done because it had been enough time since last service?

You mentioned that in first service you reported slow reverse engagement. When was this first service?

First symptons sure are similar with the ones with faulty valve body. That could have caused the fast wear of the transmission (metal shavings). Hard to tell what is the real cause, but I would discuss with the dealership. You have reported (a known) issue with the transmission (hopefully during warranty time), and they did not do anything about it. If that is the case, in my opinion they should change the transmission as a warranty job.

It is a very low km vehicle. If anything, it has been over-serviced. Unless it has some extended warranty, it was out of warranty sometime in 2015.
Given the car's kms and service record, it would be reasonable to follow Dazz's advice and ask Hy to come to the party.
 They could point to the warranty and say tough luck.
But, an alternate argument is:  Phoebe has demonstrated that the car was not capable of being driven within the average range of 15,000 - 20,000km per year during its warranty period. Therefore, this car has never been  fit for purpose.

Sundiz, Dazz and NZ are spot on.
Just because a dealer can't find the reason for a fault, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Dealing with Hyundai Australia has been successful in the past,  dealers are there to make money.
Australian Consumer Law does state "item must be fit for purpose ".

Thank you all so much for your help. Taking the car to an auto transmission specialist on Monday to see if he can pinpoint the problem. I think we'll have more luck with Hyundai if I can be more specific than 'internal failure'. If all else fails I've found a good secondhand gearbox & someone to install it.
We've moved around a lot in the last 4 yrs & the last two Hyundai service centres have wanted to do services based on the age of the car, not the k's on it.

Mate  That's brilliant  from the point of view of the service dept budget. But would you take a post-warranty car that only does 1000km/ year, in for service every 6 months? If so , why?
Brake fluid should be checked periodically for water content. A housewife can do that with a $6 pen available on ebay.
Change oil at 10-15,000 km .Even with high mileage, Brake fluid and coolant will probably only need to be flushed every 2 or 3 years.

I'd actually taken the car to a non Hyundai mechanic for the last two services for this reason (basic service roughly every 6-12 months). It was only because we'd done a substantial trip in the car (over 1000km in 5 days) before our last move & id started to experience the slip in top gear that I went back to Hyundai & agreed to the 90,000 service. We'd moved from the NT back to NSW so figured it was worth the money to have the big service & all the fluids checked etc.

You own a brilliant car, it loves doing "over 1000km in 5 days" . In fact 1000km city driving is more taxing than a long trip. I understand your caution and you did the right thing to have the transmission slip looked at. Good luck tomorrow.

PS I see many of the FD diesels that have done over 250,000 Km and they still run like new. You can expect 400,000km plus from a well maintained Diesel.

I've got two of these including the CW. If this only has 50K on it, I hope Hyundai come to the party. Both of mine were formerley abused(used). I know mine has had the Valve Body replaced and it's pretty good 99% of the time but on a rare occasion in a lot of stop start traffic I have caught the trans n between gears or it's as if the clutch packs slipping.

The CW has had a full transplant. has a bout 55K on th ebox but previous box has 177K, don't know it's history but that box was fine and still have it as a spare.

If the issue is Valve Body or the harness, both can be replaced with the box in. You can get a VB imported from Korea for $881 at current rates

Like you i only done circa 5000 miles per year.

Now i'm out of warranty the hy dealer does a minor service plus, oil plus essentails agreed before, checking updates/health check.
Any additional work found or suggested per schedule is agreed before.

So i do not have the service as per book.
