Hello all..

This has come up on a USA based forum.  In regards from changing the grade of oil used..

As most of us would know. Hyundai recommend in the owners handbook the use of 5W-30 oil..
This service bulletin has that to being changed to 5W-40 oil. For better engine protection.

While it is dated Sept 2016. The engines are still the current ones in use.

Thoughts??   If you change your own oil, what do you use..
I change mine at the 5000k mark. Dealer at the 10k service.  Using Penrite 5W-30 ACEA A5/B5    FULL SYNTHETIC 5W-30 | Penrite Oil

I'd did my intermediate service yesterday and personally prefer "10 TENTHS RACING 5W-30 (100% PAO & ESTER)" true synthetic 10 TENTHS RACING 5W-30 (100% PAO & ESTER) | Penrite Oil it has the protection of a 40 with the economy of a 20 

Combine that with a Z79AST Ryco synthetic filter for superior filtration and faster flow, 99.8% efficiency compared to a standard Ryco at 83.2%

Just did my 1st service (15k) at the dealership and mentioned that I had to put 1lt in it a few months ago... they were not surprised and mentioned it is common but asked me to bring it back in a month (lol, I aint driving 500km back there in a month).

Changing to a thinner oil seems kinda silly.

Changing to a thinner oil seems kinda silly.

Depends mostly on your temperate zone as to what thickness you require, a 30 spec will easily protect you in 50c ambient temperatures and true synthetics cover a wider spec than their semi and mineral counterparts., the thicker you go the less economical your oil becomes.

My Penrite 5W-30 PAO oil is no thinner than what I've always ran, I did use Royal Purple 5W-30 and Shell Ultra 5W-40 over a couple of years but I've never used/lost any oil on either spec.

I can see that from your avatar a 40 is fine still if that is what you want to use though not necessary unless you're really working the engine hard like with towing or racing.

Whatever oil you've used you shouldn't have used up a litre on a new engine unless you're redlining the engine all the time

Am happy to use what ever keeps the warranty happy (not that I will be changing it myself), I assume this is what Hyundai use.

That is the million dollar question, what are they using? Hyundai Rockingham (AHG) were using Castrol 5W-40 Magnatec at one stage and just before the PD was released they changed over to Castrol Edge due to some issues with Magnatec, DVG dealerships here all use Shell.

As dealerships are usually going for whatever supposedly meets specs that they can obtain at the best price I choose to use my own superior oils , and my reasoning for saying "supposedly meets specs" is Hyundai were also trying to use A3B4 oil in my 1.6ltr engine as that was what they use across the board on everything, though my engine is supposed to be using A5B5 which is the same as the current PD 1.6 turbo engines.

Sounds like you have little faith in the dealerships and don't trust them.

Why would you with the facts I've just stated not just Hyundai but any service centre, I use them for servicing so my warranty and roadside assistance remains current though I've always supplied my own products as do many others here.

I'f I hadn't remained with factory servicing I never would have had my car repaired out of warranty

Yeah, the car is a disposable shopping trolley to me and am happy to let the dealership do their thing if it keeps the warranty happy.

I can highly recommend Car Giant in Cockburn ( service centre for Hyundai Cockburn ), nice to deal with and very professional supplying my own oil and filter the service costs are $110 and done while I wait and one of the good looking counter staff make me coffee's

Fair enough, I'd be a little more concerned if my car was using oil though, Hyundai telling you it was quite common is rubbish

To be fair they did ask me to bring it back after a month so they can check it.

The great oil type debate.
My excellent mechanic always used Hy-Tech Full Syth 5w30 with Ryco filters.
10 k km or 12 mth change  (usually 12mth).  87 Falcon, 04 Challenger, 97 Falcon, 97 323 and our 16 GD i30. One Hy dealer has used Mobil FS 5w30 and another Shell FS (????) for the Santa, both with Hy filters.
I ask when I book as to what I'm getting.
