Title: i30 GLS 1600 Premium - Release/Thrust Bearing Issue
Post by: Cbeebee21 on February 27, 2018, 06:25:30
Hi All,

I am hoping to get a bit of technical advise.

I was told yesterday that the release/thrust bearing on my i30 is damaged/faulty, this is a warranty part so the dealership is happy to replace at their cost, however I've now been told that my clutch is gone and needs to be replaced.

The question I have is can the clutch become damaged/worn because of the faulty/damaged release/thrust bearing?

Thanks so much! :D

Hi,
Have you had any clutch problems  ? ,
Have tested clutch for any slip ?
How many km's ?
Clutch warranty can be a bit tricky at times.

The only damage I can think of is if the bearing was seized or sticking it could cause premature wear on the fingers of the diaphram.

I would give consideration into inquiring how much extra for them to replace the clutch assembly though if it's done a lot of work.

The transmission will be coming out to do the bearing which if it's warranty will be free. This would be the most costly part removal and refit.

So it might be prudent to take advantage of this rare opportunity

Welcome, sorry to hear that.  :wts:

The clutch only has a limited warranty, due to the fact can be prone to abuse (not saying you abused it though)

Are you the 1st owner? More information would be nice. Like the others have said.

If their price for a replacement clutch appears high remind them that you should get a reduced labour bill due to the fact they need to open the gearbox anyway.

Good luck with it.

Thank you all for your amazing replies.

In revert to some of the questions:

No clutch problems except for a ''whining'' noise from the engine bay. It was investigating this that made the dealership remove the gearbox and inspect the release bearing.

No slip, no sticking in everyday driving.

Im on 76837km's, vehicle has been for all its 15k services to date.

Noise started at about 74000km's.

Im not the first owner, Im the second. Bought the car at 21085km's.

The whining noise was reported at my 75k service but was never investigated. Only after taking video footage and being persistent have they removed the gearbox and fed back the below info. I cant figure out how if my clutch wasnt showing any signs of being ''gone'' have I gotten to this point in 24 days?

I may be out of date with current designs but I don't understand  how or why a dealer would remove a transmission just to diagnose.

My understanding of the thrust bearing is it only comes into contact when the pedal is depressed so it should only make a noise then and when the pedal is released it should be quiet.

But the last and only time I've experienced a worn out bearing was 33 years ago :crazy1:

But there could be other things in play here.

If you have a link to share of the video, that would be interesting to listen to.

Long enough. On sound alone impossible to pin but that's certainly a candidate. If the sound was unable to be pinpointed, I'd drop the drive belt and if it persisted then I'd vary the pedal pressure on the clutch looking for a variation in pitch as it loaded up.

If there is damage to the pressure plate that will be covered by warranty, the actual clutch disc is very  cheap,  ebay has genuine for about $100.

Really Cbeebee,  you have good advice from Mick and tw. Go with it! It is accurate and far more valuable than the above waffle you have been given by some counter jockey who needs to be noticed and has probably never held a spanner in his life.  :whistler:
