Aw thanks guys!!!!  Love youse all :).

No, I have no other issues with the car currently.  This is the first major issue I've had with it since owning it since brand spanking new.

Yeah I can always play dumb when it comes to asking for trade in  :p

I'm just so confused.  Do I fix it and lose money or lose money regardless with trade in?

I'll consult with friend in the coming days and will report back.

In the meantime, I'll grab some trade in quotes from a few dealerships in Geelong.

Sounds like a good plan Vanessa! Some trade in prices will horrify you but others may not be so bad.

Administrator Comment If they want to take it for a run, insist on going with them for "insurance purposes" so they don't thrash it!

How safe would a turbo be from a wrecker?  I found one online for $500 plus delivery.

Dad seems to think not safe and rather me pay the $1800 for a new one.

Depends how reliable the wreckers is and if they offer a warranty? Would be nice to know the history of the turbo (what mileage the donor car had done and how long ago it was scrapped) If the donor car was only scrapped in the last month or two, had only done 50K or less and they offered some sort of warranty the $500 wouldn't be too bad!

Most wreckers have a warranty, I can see no reason why it wouldn't give you plenty of trouble free miles. I have used wreckers parts before and have had no issue with them. They are basically good parts in a car that has had a premature death.

If you were going to trade/sell spending $500 on the turbo to remove the problem might be a very wise investment indeed.

Having been selling an i30 for a while, the recent 20k government bonus has flooded the used car market with stock, so there is plenty out there. Values aren't that great either as a trade or private sale. Personally I would throw the $500 turbo in and move on. But to each their own.

Can't really tell how much work it has done. Been in storage over a year so maybe you can get it down to $400 (but must get some warranty!)

I think they want to sell the whole car, God knows why. The wheels are worth $500 easy by themselves (if the set is good).

Wrecker called I think from Sydney, said I can get part, labour and tow for $1200......I don't think he understood me that I'm in Geelong.

Either way, said 3 month warranty on part and labour.

Back to square one.

Checked my phone log and not Sydney, that was Campbellfield in Vic.

This is Sydney quote: $660 + $35 delivery.  Travelled less than 30,000km.

The pic I posted earlier is from a Sydney parts mob, $500 delivered.

At least you have alternatives. Maybe the $695 delivered is the best option.

Sad isn't it!

Problem is they will probably only be able to sell it for 9 or 10k and they build about 3K in for anything they have to do plus overheads.

Detailing, tyres, rego etc..

In all honesty 6k for a 2008 with 180k and a dodgy turbo isn't too bad.

I sold my 2010 i30cw in excellent condition with 136k on the clock and 4 months rego privately for 9.

If you add in say 1k for the turbo and another 500 for the service (I think you could get a bit of overlap between the two).  That's 7500.

The key question would be are you then paying full price for a new car?

Drove this.  Can get for $18000 with trade in.

I didn't tell them about dodgy turbo, but I'm sure they'll check the most recent service notes.

Cavet Emptor especially for professionals such as dealers, they should be able to work that out at an inspection....

But 22021-6000 does not equal 18k?

I don't know how he is diddling the books to put 6k on your car, unless your adding options?

Vanessa,

Why don't you go into carsales.com and choose cars in your price range with the features you want within 50 or 100 kms of your postcode. I think the one they are offering you is a bit of a rip off at 18k c/over...  :spitty:

Yeah looked at Carsales.

So it seems that the average turbo from a wrecker is $600-700 inc $35 delivery.  All come with 3 month warranty.

Campbellfield, which is in Melbourne and not far from my work, is as stated above, offering $1,250 with a low km turbo unit that has done 45,000km's.  The above price will also include a tow pick up and also a 3 months part and labour warranty.

I'm thinking of taking up either this latter option or get a part from the wrecker and ask my mechanic to install it.

TBH, I can't really afford a new car now as I'm going away on holidays and took me ages to save up for this and unless I find full time work, I can't afford $180 a fortnight on finance over 5 years, which is what Hyundai worked out yesterday.

I think the $1250 supplied and installed is the way to go because they can't try and blame your mechanic if it doesn't last 3 months.
