Hi all,

I am not 100% if I am in the right area however I just want to raise a minor concern:

when I drive my '18 SR Premium, on a high way driving at 110km/hr, my steering wheel vibrates, this only happens when I drive over 100 -- I have new wheels on my car since February. Is this normal or should it not be like that?

Does it happen it anyone else?

Shouldn't happen.
Vibration in the steering wheel suggests a balance problem.

So, if it was OK for a while after the new wheels (and tyres???) were fitted, then it's probably thrown a weight off.

If it was there from the time you had the wheels fitted then they weren't balanced correctly.

I'd go back to where the wheels were fitted and ask them to check the balance (and the tread runout on the tyres).

@ JC087.  What Surferdude said.  I have not experienced your problem on my SR with its original oem wheels and tyres.

Do you mind advising what new wheels you got (brand, model, size) and why did you change (looks, or function?).  And, tyres?

Thanks, Dazzler, I must have missed that thread.  I had been toying with getting quality, lightweight 17" wheels with quality sports tyres (like yours) with 45 aspect ratio to get the same rolling diameter as my oem 18" wheel/tyre combo, with their 40 aspect ratio tyres. 

Was mainly thinking about the switch to (a) get reduced cabin noise on "coarse, grainy" road surfaces (even if only a bit, but noticeable); and (b) get improved handling at speed and on wet roads.

Put those plans on wish-list hold when I bought a set of very good condition oem 18" wheels with oem low km tyres so I could use one as a spare tyre (and they cost way less than Hyundai would sell me one wheel, bare!).

BTW, what's your latest impression of the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 in terms of cabin noise and speed/wet performance?

Yeah, I’ll have to consider that option. They fitted me two new tires in front because the old tires were leaking air and i still have the original tires for the back wheels.

regarding cabin noise, I can’t help you with that because I am deaf so I cannot hear the difference but the feel of driving with the wheels is good except for that vibration problem, that I need to get it looked at. Below 110km/hr it was all fine and smooth.

Wife reckons they are no quieter than the Hankooks. I think they are a little bit. It is definitely a different noise they generate. More of a rumble where the Hankooks generate more of a roar. I can't be sure but after more than 15,000 kilometres in the 6 months since I got them I think they may have got slightly noisier than they were, hence the Wife's recent comment.

As far as grip in the wet and dry they are awesome. Definitely well suited the the SR/N-Line. As i've said before they do encourage you to drive harder though which may affect fuel consumption. Tyre wear could also be an issue they are looking quite well used. The way I've been pushing them may only last 35 or 40K (lucky I'll probably only do another 5K before my Hybrid arrives).

Guys, thanks for all your tips.

I took my car back to the same wheels store and turns out the balance was a bit off so they fixed the balance and the vibration was no longer an issue. 😄
