Hello Everyone,
Hoping for some thoughts and advise. Our 2012 i30 wagon malfunction indicator light came on yesterday after two hours of a three hour drive. We had just had the car serviced (at about 75000kms) and I just commented on how well it was driving. It is driving well as far as my husband and I can tell, however our local Hyundai service centre has diagnosed P0741 torque converter, clutch slipping, internal malfunction in gearbox. They are quoting $5950 for a reconditioned gearbox. We paid $12,000 for the car second hand in 2016 and are freaking out about the thought of this cost. Does this sound a realistic price and given we are not experiencing any driving issues any ideas on how to proceed? We are thinking of a second opinion at our local mechanic. Would appreciate any thoughts.

Sounds a bit dodgy with multiple failures that should have been identified at the  service.
If the dealer has given a written report, could you add it to your post as it will help the more knowledgeable /tech heads on the forum.  Definitely take it your local guy , 👍

Some possible causes here P0741 HYUNDAI Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Stuck Off

Even in worst case $5950 is a ridiculous price, though expected with factory service centres A few months ago a friend of mine was quoted $4800 by Mitsubishi to replace their Lancer's engine after check light came on, I suggested a good mechanic friend of mine who got them up and running again with a new oil pump installed for $900.

Sounds crazy. is their any kind of diagnostic report outlining what they did and what they found to confirm the fault and justifying total transmission replacement?

This is what the manual quotes for that DTC as a guide.

Sorry to hear of your problem. Can't add anything technically to the other members excellent helpful posts, however...

As your car is only 6 years old with moderate mileage and recently out of warranty, you should have some recourse under Australian consumer laws. A reasonable person would not expect an expense of that magnitude on a vehicle of that age and mileage. I hate the way the repairers bandy around these huge unrealistic repair charges like they are small change! 

The first thing would be to get a second opinion. Maybe a transmission specialist would be the best option. I would also get the warning reset as it might be a false alarm. Then monitor the light and the car's behaviour.

Not saying much in my opinion. slipping on take off, interesting, probably would need line pressure tests and interpretation by a specialists. These boxes do suffer from valve body wear so there's a possibilty it may be that.

too hard to fault find over the web, Hopefully you can find an honest trans place. If it's Valve Body you can order one from Korea and be around $900

Used box may be an option, always a gamble

Oh, ok, nice one dazz.

Should be heaps of used ones out there then for the 2.0 l petrol. I doubt this box needs a full rebuild though
