Title: 2009 1.6l gear changes intermittently tough or not happening -new clutch
Post by: Cloggedmammal44 on May 10, 2021, 19:35:53
Evening all, first post and not someone who has a great knowledge or maintaining cars, so please dumb down for a beginner!!
I've had my 2009 1.6l manual i30 for about 3 years. It's only done 40k miles, but I've had recurring issues with the gear changes for a while. First time, they started getting difficult regularly, as in I had to force it into gear. I got a new clutch installed and that seemed to solve it for a few months.
However, today I noticed that it was slightly tougher than before, wasn't too worried as I thought that would be normal once the clutch had worn in. Unfortunately, there were several times when I couldn't get it into gear at all, certainly lower gears. I thought it was me, that I wasn't depressing the clutch all the way, but it was difficult occasionally when I made sure I did. It's only lower gears, mostly when it's cold but not exclusively. It's occasional, most of the time it's completely smooth, sometimes it's rough and a handful of times it won't go in at all. I also seemed to notice an occasional clunk as it went down into first gear, though not sure if that's a normal occurrence, never hear it before.
Is my gearbox on the way out or is there something simpler I can check? I've checked the clutch fluid and that's within the right filling level.
Thank you

Hi    :wlcome02:

Sounds like this may be a gear linkage cable problem.

Try putting those terms into our search engine.

Is there any adjustment on these clutches? I may not be adjust correctly, if its not fully disengaging it can make it difficult to get into gear at a standstill and a bit notchy getting into the next gear. Does the clutch engage right on the floor?

I would say it engages fairly low but not in the floor. Which I think is about normal. Going into gear, that has varied, simply because the harder gear changes have meant I've had my foot firmly pressed in the hope to get it in, normally disengaging and retrying will get it to slip into gear, but it took a couple of tries on occasion yesterday.

You could try adjusting it up off the floor a little and see if that changes the way it engages.

The only other time i have had a car do similar things the spline the clutch moves on had surface rust or debris on it and was preventing the clutch plate from moving away from the flywheel properly. Usually cant check/fix that kind of thing without dropping the gearbox unfortunately

Has your transmission ever had an oil change?
