Welcome Ebrahim.. None of our members have done it as far as I am aware. Suspect the cost would be prohibative and there would/could be warranty issues... :disapp:

Welcome Ebrahim19,

It would be better to purchase a 6sp car, as all the necessary changes, even the ECU, are performed at the factory when assembled.

  • Sorry, but my karma just ran over your dogma.
Welcome Ebrahim. I think it would be possible but only if the car wasn't moving.

20 years ago when I got my first car, a 1978 VW Passat, I changed the engine with one from a VW Scirocco, and later changed the stock 4 speed gearbox with a 5 speed.

I wouldn't dare any of this in a modern car with all the electronics build in.

But please let us know if you decide to make the change...

Probably the best improvement you can make to a i30 race/rally car after you send it to Jenny Craig.

Taking a look at the parts software it's clear that the 5 and 6 speed gearbox have the same mounting bolts, so it would probalbly a plug&play fit.

Mechanically that may be so, but I suspect the ecu would require updating too.

why would ecu need to know? all it is, is gear ratio & manualy shifted. only thing if ecu controls speedo that might be so.

What about the fuel injectors, aren't our cars pre-programmed for economy / performance. I've read where remapping has been performed to gain performance, so wouldn't some extra info be required for 6th gear.

Interesting idea.  I was almost going to post the same question that Lakes did. To take notice of the gear would need sensors (switches) to identify which gear. I assumed it did not apart from reverse of course to turn on the reversing lights.

Lakes' observation re the speedo is quite valid depending where the sensor is. Surely it's on the front axle though in which case it only needs to be considered if the front tyre circumference is changed.

As an aside, I was in Jaycar yesterday and their kit that allows adjustment/correction of the speedo was $55 from memory.

The ECU only looks at the speed, Rpm and throtle position... adding a new gearbox wouldn't change anything.
