Yes, she can drive a manual if someone teaches her, no test necessary.

In UK:

Manual licence = authority to drive manuals and auto
Auto licence = authority to drive auto only

If you hold auto licence you have to take and pass a test in manual car before you can drive a manual car.

Not surprising, given your traffic density and weather etc. It was always the plan to get the license 1st then learn manual, but no one has a manual to learn on, so it hasn't happened yet.

Learning how to drive a manual doesn't take long if you know how to drive the rest of the vehicle. I teach by explaining the mechanics of spinning flywheels and stationary gears so the learner knows why they are gently releasing the clutch. Should be interesting times when it happens.  :D

hi Phil aka 84
might be a long shot but did you check the main glow plug fuse in the engine compartment.its the small fuse box on the left of the engine as you are looking in.mine blew 2 months ago from switching the ignition on/off all the time to open/close the windows.

Does that mean you can get a drivers license for auto cars only...

...and then upgrade to manual ...

That actually is the case here.
Many opt for getting their licence in an auto which only allows them to drive an auto while on their provisional licence.
Once on a full licence you are then able to drive both auto & manual...

Daughter is on full license

@Aymeric

The car is at the dealer for repairs, so that's their problem now, thanks for the suggestion though.  :goodjob2:

If you get a manual licence it covers both manual & auto cars.
If you get an auto licence it covers you for auto only and it would need to be upgraded to include manual.

Does upgrade = test in manual?

or do you get it by other factors i.e. age, time with auto licence etc?

A whole new application for an additional class and a test in a manual.

So are you saying that someone can do their test in an automatic and be qualified to drive a manual as well?  :undecided:

Being Victorian born and bred, I learned many years after I got my well-earned manual licence that you could pass driving an auto and that you could then use it for a manual. I guess the assumption is that learning to handle gears is easy once you can handle the traffic.

I like our system better.
Handling conditions is one thing but knowing how to drive a manual is another.
I do agree though that it would be nice to have uniformity between states & territories (as long as ours won. )

Only when  they are off their provisional licence.....Once they have their full licence they are free to drive a manual.
