Some of you may have seen my post about a tuning chip I've ordered from chipmydiesel.com.au and since installed. Well, in case anyone is interested, I can share with you some results, not very scientific I'll admit. Note I haven't had the car on the dyno yet but the small adjustments have made a noticeable difference in real world driving. I have 4 settings to play with, All, Low, Mid and High. All governs an increase in all rev ranges, Low is low end, Mid is middle range and High is top end performance. Default setting was 4-All.4-Low.2-Mid.0-High. All settings go from 0-9. On this default setting there was a noticeable increase in power, the engine felt more responsive but it was all down low, so 1st through to 3rd gear. I made an adjustment to 4.4.3.1 and there was a good gain, 3rd gear really came alive and the increase was definitely there, it just seemed to pull a lot harder so I was happy with that. Tonight I'll tune a little more to 4.4.4.2. If all goes well then I'll make a date with a dyno to get some official results which I'm happy to share. I'm tuning for performance as next year I'll be running in a few hillclimb events so I'll keep you all posted. The car is used as a daily driver so I'm just making small changes but I think the missus will replace soon so it will then be strictly for play.

I know you said you are tuning for performance but if you were able to make some observations in regards to economy effects I think many here would be interested in that too.

Will be interesting to see the result from the dyno.. :mrgreen:

Had for a period the RaceChip tuningbox fitted to my i30 and there was a noticeable difference in torque and power, but never got it on a dyno.

I would really like to know how much torque is the drivetrain in the 1,6 CRDi capable of, long term...?  Anyone know where that kind of info is available, if, at all..?

With regards to fuel economy, I'm happy to share the impact of my adjustments via the trip computer as to whether it goes up or down. I'm interested to see what the result will be to everyday driving which is mostly a mixture of freeway during the week and suburbs-stop start of a weekend. You can of course tune for economy but it's not my focus in this project. But thanks all for the feedback, I'll keep y'all posted!

I'm keeping my eyes on this too. I think the GD 1.6CRDI is pretty average in low end response (1st/2nd gears) from a standing start.
Although I don't want to put one on while the car is under warranty, and I also don't want to put one on after warranty expires, in case component failure leads to an expensive repair. But then I would love to see better get up & go from the car! Ergh.

I took the i30 out yesterday at Sydney Motorsport Park on the North Circuit for the afternoon and I was lapping consistently 1min 35 secs. I had to drive conservatively so I could drive it to Strathfield and pickup the missus from work. Down the main straight I would hit about 170 before I'd have to wipe off some speed for the kink. Standard tyres and brakes were good for about 1 lap and it handled like a bus but I did have a lot of fun! If I had better brakes and suspension I'd be confident getting under 1 min 30. The only mod on the car is the tune box which I tweaked a little more. My previous car, a Ford Fiesta XR4 cooked the power steering pump after 10 laps at Wakefield but I must have done at least 25-30 laps over the afternoon and I had zero problems. I'll post a pic and video later this morning.

For the benefit of ka-ching, the steering is electric (no power steering pump)

I remember hastily consulting the service book and asking my local mechanic to price up my last servicing including spark plug change. We both laughed when I came back 5 minutes later on my pushy to amend the expectation. :head_butt:

Yes. It turns out that when I approached a local tuning shop to get the i30 on the dyno, they were dead set against tuning the chip I'd purchased and wanted to only work with the i30's ECU. I was quoted $1899 to tune the ECU, was told they steer clear of the chip I'd purchased as they have had issues with them. I've had no issues with the chip tuning box myself so I'm looking around for another shop that can just work with what I've got before we even look at the ECU. With Xmas just weeks away I'll be following up in the new year.

A full ECU tune should give better performance as the tune is personalised for the specific characteristics of your vehicle, tuner boxes are mainly for people who cant afford or be bothered having it done correctly or the other issue where the car is still under warranty so it can be quickly removed before going to the service centre.

A good MOD shop generally wont touch aftermarket chips because they cant guarantee someone else's work and like I stated earlier you'll get a better tune though $1899 is rather excessive :Shocked: I spent nearly a full week on the dyno with my Clubsport and that was $1000 and not just fuel and timing tunning as I had modified ( re-tuned ) the gear shift and load points and recalculations for the diff ratio changes plus removing the knock sensors.

A tune is superior to a chip, I've had both a another CRD vehicle, the tune wins , you are getting touched if you pay $1800 for a tune, mine cost $900 7 months ago. Wifes i30 still has chip, being going fine for 5yr, if it died, I would get a tune.

Does anyone know by what amount do the chips increase the rail pressure?

I asked racechip but they couldn't/wouldn't tell me. I just want to make sure it doesn't increase max pressure by a stupid amount. As it is now, being all standard, at max load it's nearly 25000psi.

 I've always stayed clear of them, even though they work to a certain extent, like CraigB as stated a custom remap is far superior and safer than a tuning box, these tuning boxes fool the ECU into thinking it needs more fuel by telling the ecu the fuel pressure is lower than what it actually is, so the ecu tells the injector pump to up the pressure thus putting more strain on the injector pump.

Also another thing to consider, found this bit off the net

Economy and Tuning Boxes
From the original calculations in the ECU, and the Vehicle Road Speed, the ECU will be able to calculate the quantity of fuel used per unit of distance traveled. But what happens if the quantity of diesel injected is higher than the value the ECU is expecting? In this case, the economy will be overestimated as the ECU thinks it is using less diesel than reality. As with most external changes, if one calibrated component is disturbed, the knock on effects will be far reaching.
That's not to say that there isn't an increase in economy, there will be changes, and often the economy does increase, but certainly not to the level that the On Board Computer or Trip Computer thinks.
