Hey guys,
I am looking for ideas to upgrade my turbo diesel i30. What modifications can I do? Such as: exhaust, computer, intake, increasing boost and just other mods that you guys may have done.
I am also looking for places to get parts. Any advice would be fantastic TIA.

Welcome LilBronnyG

Try RaceChip, boosting the fuel rail pressure with a chip is about the easiest power upgrade you can do :link: Online Shop ? Buy your RaceChip tuning box now - RaceChip Australia

Other accessories can be purchased via eBay or some of the Korean aftermarket stores like Shark Racing :link: The Korean Car Specialists and KDM Motors :link: KDM Motors Inc. ? kdm-motors and several others if you search.

New genuine parts can be bought through Hyundai at a premium or companies like Koraps :link: KORAPS - KORea Auto Parts Service - HYUNDAI KIA GM SSANGYONG RENAULT Genuine Parts! Low Price! and online via eBay, good second hand parts via your local wreckers.

The little turbo diesel is awesome little motor without any mods. If it were me I'd just tart the car up a bit with nice wheels and stuff but leave the mechanicals as they are. Although a K&N air filter and a sports exhaust wouldn't hurt.

It's just that increasing performance on a 10 year old car puts extra strain on tired components and things like brakes and stuff will need upgrading too if you do get a significant gain. Could become a money pit. Sorry to be a party pooper, but sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.

ECU-tuning is THE way to go...If its the 1.6 CRDI 110 BHP you got, ECU-tuning should be able to bring it to approx. 160 BHP.

Tuning-boxes is fine but the 110 BHP engine is limited to 85% so just removing this limit will add approx 20 BHP "Free" & then the tuner should be able to find 25-30 BHP on top of that  :goodjob:

Don't forget any changes in power output from manufactuers may have repercussions in an insurance claim if insurers not informed of changes.....

  • 1.4 Petrol Active I'm no expert, so please correct me if

It's more if you have a major accident and they pick up it has unlisted mechanical enhancements.  They may dishonour the claim.

Bang on Dazzler, or any accident for that matter.

I don't know about different countries but here in the UK, insurance costs are board-line criminal (especially for younger drivers). On top of that, any modification which has not been declared stands a good chance of invalidating the insurance and if they get a chance to duck out of having to pay you can bet your bottom dollar they will.

I ask again...How & why should anyone find out your ECU got +30% more "uhmps" put into it?

Has there been any precedents in UK where a chipped car has been denied coverage? I have never ever heard of it here :-)

You make a very good point. The way most insurance companies look for an out there would still have to be an increased risk of a claim being refused.

I'm guessing it would depend on the type of accident and the speeds involved etc.. as to how likely they would be to look for any mods.

It sounds like kind of like a "0"-answer to me.....Furthermore, if its a 2. hand car you got, how should they ever prove that it was you & not the former owner who had the chipping done & you just (Is that actually an english word? :-D ), bought the car not knowing it had been chipped  :whistler:

I was a salesman in a past life so I can sidestep a question fairly well..  :snigger:

There is definitely a risk which everyone is going to consider differently. I think all of us take risks in our lives in different ways.

It's all about balancing the benefits and the risks. Everyone has a different perception and different priorities.

For example I find my SR adequate as it is. I wouldn't personally spend multiple hundreds of $ to gain a few seconds of acceleration. I would probably consider the risk of possible engine damage or warranty problems more than the insurance risk.

How much is the insurance company going to pay out for a 10 year old diesel anyway, 5-10% of new value?
Probably not enough to warrant having it under full insurance anyway, I would just take the bare minimum to cover damage to other parties and make the car legal. I think my 5 year old is borderline if its worth the double insurance cost for full coverage. Now I'm getting 2000€ of deer collision damage fixed for free in mid February, so it turns out to be a good deal this time, if it was 10 years old I would not have considered fixing the dent and scrapes though, that premium is better saved on an account for the next car.

I've had the EGR blocked off the last year. Not really a performance upgrade, as it only affects behaviour under 2000 RPM on the i30. I removed it today, hopefully I can live with the shudders at low RPM and save the 6.85% (or 125l/year) that fuel consumption increased after installing the mod.

Good point xiziz!

With a 10 y/o car I would worry more about the strain on already worn components that extra performance would cause.

But it is not my car.
