Not hyundai but the rover forums aren't as active as this one. Plus I know you lot are full of mad professors that know a lot more than I do.

Bought a project........

Bought a rover 214 sei with a suspected HGF after inspection it seemed to be the inlet manifold gasket. So I changed that put it back together and now the car won't turn over at all get a whine when I try to start it but no sign of the engine attempting to start.

I've changed the battery no luck gave the starter motor a good smacking still nothing.

Thought maybe the engine had seized so tried turning it and the engine is free.

Any suggestions would be very well received as I'm stumped and don't want to scrap it.

I've uploaded tried uploading a video of the noise it makes but had no joy.

Any chance you have forgotten to reconnect a sensor at the cam shaft or so..?

Does sound like the starter motor is not throwing in even though you have given it a good whack.

Checked all connectors all seem to be fine maybe need to check them with a multimeter.
Normally when it's the starter you would still hear a clicking??

Sounds like starter solenoid not engaging. If you can get a second person try hitting starter while cranking.

As Cruiserfield has said, I used to have a car and the starter motor played up and that was the only way to make it work. Replaced the starter motor in the end.

If I can pin point that it is the starter I'll replace it. It will only be about £20

My instant thought when you mentioned the whining was the starter free'spinning with the solenoid not engaging its clutch. Good luck. :goodjob:

Guy at work has said the whining is the fuel pump engaging and his first instinct was to try and bump start the car

In that case your starter could be seized, so maybe you didn't quite put it back the same as it was. :Dunno:

I've been informed that it doesn't especially as it doesn't have a key fob as my first impulse was immobilizer

The immobilizer was just a thought. Have you tried hitting the solenoid as suggested by Cruiserfield while someone else turns the key or bump starting it yet ?

Haven't had a chance to be honest. There's no massive urgency
