Title: Hatch release
Post by: eye30 on March 13, 2018, 17:12:09
Noticed the pad which protects the hatch release button has crumbled.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Looking at it the "rubber" bit that you press in has dried out and the constant pressing has caused the "rubber" to crumble.

Looked to see if it is a cap that pulls off but doesn't want to budge.

So it seems that it is a moulded unit which fits into the body work.

Does anyone have:
 1. A detail schematic view of the tailgate set up so i can see how ìt fits together
2. Part number

Is yours out of warranty yet? How old and what mileage, just out of interest. I get the impression it will be low for age.

GD model.

Thanks for pics.

Looks like the release is 1 unit so unable to buy cover on own.

Will check out a few scrapies first before i contact dealer.

Due service in may so if i don't get part in meantime will see if they will do me a deal as i'm a repeat customer.

$7 USD part at Koraps + freight. Cheap enough if you are really concerned

Cheers,

Had a look this morning and it seems as if it just pulls/prisses out as no obvious screws unless you have to remove the panel.

Is that correct or do you know whether the panel needs to be removed?

That's what I see looking at the pictures and all I can say really

Can you not simply take a sheet of soft plastic or rubber - cut it to shape and stick it over the existing rubber using 3M double back tape around the periphery.

Earlier i had time to kill so looked again at it.

The black cover prissed off and within it the white plunger came away.

It left the unit in the frame but looks as if it will come out with a small screwdriver on each side pressing in a flexi type fitting.

Looking at the unit there is a printed circuit with a small plunger which activates the lock.

So it would appear that the cover can be replaced BUT i bet that is not possible based on previous comments re parts.

I'll look at doing something alan suggest but first there is a scrapie near by who allow you to look around for parts then they remove for you, health & safety......., i could just "feel" for the part and remove.......... :whistler:

Did you do it yourself or was it under warranty?

If yourself did the unit just come out by pressing in the flexi type fittings either side or did you have to remove the panel?.

I've taken 2 photo's this morning of the units bits and bobs plus the 1 i took the other day..

What a revelation.

It's a 5 pound item on Koraps, let the fingers do the work and submit a warehousing request.

The similar item for a FD which is no smaller is showing about 6 pounds for freight to the UK, Small Air.

That's 11GBP. If I'm reading correctly items under 15GBP have no VAT or Import Duty.

And , delivered to your door I presume.

How much time and fuel was consumed over the 7 visits? :crazy2:

Received a rely to my email from the Executive team:

Thank you for your recent email to Tony Whitehorn, CEO and President of Hyundai Motor UK.

We have contacted our Technical department regarding the tailgate release pad and i am sorry to confirm that  this is only available as a complete unit and not sold separate.

===============/=========
Well i'm not shelling out £48 as all i require is the cover which would probably be say a few ££££.

Looks like i'll be doing a cut and paste type job along the lines suggested by allanho..

I might reply asking how many units have been replaced due to the cover only requiring renewal and why the powers to be back at hy hq have not set the cover as a replacement item.

Well i must say  a big thank you to hy uk.

I sent an email and the initial reply was that i would have to buy the complete unit at £48 as the pad is not a available on its own.

I sent a return email asking if they would be willing on my behalf to contact the supplier to source the pad as a stand alone as to pay for the complete unit when all i require is the pad was a bit steep, plus i felt as not 6 years old and the only means of accessing the boot it should last at least the life of the car.

I got a reply thanking me for my feedback and as goodwill to replace foc as the pad is not available as a single item.

So done today.

I know customer are quick to complain about poor service but slow to praise.

This is my praise for hy uk who replaced a part out of warranty.
Thank you.....

Do you mean the rubber that protects the switch you place fingers on to open?
 See photo in post #24

If so, it just pulls off as held in place by slightly raised lug.

Scotty Kilmer (YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/user/scottykilmer)) recommends using a silicone spray to 'condition' the rubber and prevent it drying and cracking.

Earlier today I got this (https://www.toolstation.com/silicone-spray/p21983) from Toolstation. Does anyone else do this?

I was going to make comment but , hell , you need to diversify. Staring to think there's only 2 things you look at on the web.

In the past I thought he was ok, then I found a better religion! What annoys me most now is his exaggerated titles, so you click on something expecting one thing and get a whole lot of other rubbish. He's also heavily sponsored with product.

For the purists, there's a lot better if you want technical knowledge and fault finding. South Main Auto, Pine Hollow Diagnostics, Diagnose Dan, Scanner Danner, and Eric the car guy althyough he can whine on a bit. I would put Scotty at the end, sometimes it can break the monotony.
