Title: 6 Speed Auto Transmission concerns - Your thoughts
Post by: pidim on November 15, 2019, 08:49:14
I made mention of this in another post but wanted to separate the topic on its own, if possible, as I really am concerned.

This is for the 6 speed auto transmission in my 1.8L 2012 GD series - 86000kms

This is one of the issues I have noticed recently, prior and after my transmission oil flush and wanted to get some comments.

When I am in “D” mode, there is a (very) slight “clunk” sound that is heard and “felt” when car is coasting in a gear taller than 4th and I need to brake, as the car slows down before stopping completely.

As I start to apply the brake pedal to slow the car down (eg at a give way sign) it downshifts to 3rd just before the complete stop when it will then go into first silently, which is what has always happened.  However, I am noticing a very slight “clunk" sound and you would need to listen very carefully to hear it and also a less-than-perfect downshift which can be “just” felt via the foot on the brake pedal and hands on the wheel – if that makes sense.

The issue is that I can’t tell if this is how it has always been.  If the car is in 4th gear, there is no sound or rougher downshift to 3rd while in “D”.

On the odd occasion it also makes the very soft clunk but no roughness, when I accelerate, even at a feather weight application of the pedal, but certainly don't stamp on it in order to get that sound.

I would really appreciate some advice or your comments as I don’t know whether I am over-reacting to all of this, as I am not keen on having to fork out a heap of money right now.

1.   Is this a normal characteristic which I possibly have never noticed?
2.   Does it have anything to do with the torque converter in taller gears? Sorry for the dumb questions
3.   Could it be something other than A/T  eg– Brakes?
4.   Could it be an engine mount or other?
5.   I spoke to the mechanic that did the oil change, on the phone, as he had not noticed anything at all during his road test and he said that it may be a solenoid and referred me to Transmission specialist as he was not 100% sure himself. What do you guys think?

I hope I can get your thoughts, ideas or better if you have also experienced similar out of this 6 speed auto.

pidim, mate at this stage I would just live with it.

Recently, I worked on an FD with similar ks. Drove nicely but after driving for about 25km,  a slight jolt would develop as the car rolled to a stop. At first I thought  it felt like a lump in a brake rotor, but logically that would not come and go.

Trans fluid looked ok but changed and flushed . Nothing else I could attack.
Maybe it was psychological, but the transmission seemed a bit quieter and smoother. However the same single jolt/surge reoccurred during a long drive.

Conclusion: The time taken to find and fix it , whatever it is   :undecided:, will probably cost more than a repair when it stuffs up, if ever it does  :undecided:.

You’re setting off my OCD. 😂

:goodjob2:

I will never contemplate chasing a minor flaw in a trans after my Mitsubishi / Fluid Drive experience or paying somone after my RACQ approved fraudulent Ripoff repair in the 90's.

If it's relatively insignificant  I'd keep running with it and if it shits itself I'd go for a used low K unit , There's likely a lot out there for sale.

My 6speeder in the i40 can have the occasional 1-2 shift that's a little harsher than normal on the first shift of the day but it's rare

While I understand your concern. Jumping at shadows is never a good idea.

Not saying you are/or do, but we have had quite a few members over the years who joined looking for problems that either weren't there or weren't worth worrying about.. They end up on a hiding to nowhere.

It would be different if you were test driving a couple of auto i30's and one did this while the other didn't.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

Talking with a colleague who owns a couple of i30s and works on them on all time, reckons that this is more likely a software issue (TCU programming) from my explanation, rather than hardware as the i30 6sp Auto is quite a bullet proof unit, especially with the kms I have done.  His advice was to go to a dealer as a first step to see what they say.

So I actually have my so-called extended 8 yr (3yr dealer ) warranty which I will put to the test if I need some backup plan and so will see how they try to backpedal out of this one  LOL.  Anyway, I don't mind paying if it is a reasonable price but will not be talked into something major.  I plan to be in the car when they test drive and will wait at the dealer for that day.

Let's see what happens as I really don't want to ignore this and get to it early.
