Hopefully it is the correct one and someone can identify what you are doing wrong or give you a tip on getting around the issue!  :undecided:

I think I can see the problem.
On the facia there are two clips at the top that clip into the dash.
On the stock unit there is a good gap between the underside of these clips and the main body of the headunit giving space for the plastic section that it clips into.
On the Android unit the main body of it is pressing against the underside of the clips, so there's no way for the clips to fully engage.
I'm tempted to snap the clips off completely, as I think it will help and they really aren't doing much to hold anything anywhere....

If you are not in a mad rush I would wait before snapping them off just in case someone comes up with another solution.  They must have some purpose.   :undecided:

This is good advice...

That I just saw after bulldozing my way through trying again :D

I snapped the clips off and it might have made things slightly easier, but ultimately I gorilla jammed it in, gorilla jammed the Aircon control back it and tightened all the screws.

It's OK. But still not a perfect fit. I don't think the manufacturers ever tried actually fitting one to an i30. The lip that those clips go into pushes against the metal part of the HU, stopping it fitting perfectly flush.

I'll attach a picture later, but I'm happy with it.

I was going from personal experience At 61 (and a half) I finally learnt "if in doubt, don't" with most things anyway.

I have also found with tricky fixes or situations a couple of days of pondering does wonders....

I do have a tip for anyone doing this. I created a new Google account for the head unit, then added the account to my "Family" on my main Google account.

This way I can share purchases from my main account so I don't have to buy stuff twice, I can use my Google Play Music family.subscription, but if someone manages to nick my car, or I leave someone in my car when I'm not there, they don't get access to my full Google account.

Yeah, I think it fits fine. There is a gap if you look from the right angle, but it's not going to bother me.

I think I got away with snapping the clips off.

Anyway, I've voided the warranty now by taking the top off to tweak the screen contrast.

It is nice and bright, very clear, and viewing angle doesn't have an adverse effect on it.

The only problem I have is that it is a little washed out, so grey on white isn't as visible as it could be.
There is a little screw that you can turn on the circuit board on the back of the screen, which has improved things somewhat.

My next tweak will be playing with the "Lux" Android app, to have it adjust screen brightness based on time of day.

I have run the provided USB cable from the back of the unit to the glovebox, so have two handy in the car.

At some future point I plan to try and hook up the existing microphone in the roof.

All in all, very happy, and a vast improvement over the stock unit.

Looks good large pig. Glad you got it in!!
I am going to have to open mine up and have a look at the contrast pin as your screen does look much better than mine!

After living with it for over a month I am happy with the upgrade. Need to look at fitting a better DAB Aerial as an amplifier/DAB splitter on the standard i30 Aerial is very hit and miss.

I am also contemplating a custom ROM but not sure whether to chance it or not...

Hey,

The contrast knob is fiddly to get to, once you have popped the top, you have to unscrew the DVD drive and move it asside (I didn't want to unplug it) all whilst keeping the headunit supported and powered so you can see the screen while you adjust it. A spare pair of hands would help.

I found that it gets more washed out in either direction, somewhere in the middle is optimum.

I loaded this image up on the screen so I could see what was going on https://goo.gl/images/YytFxK

I don't actually think if it has a screw head, but I used a philips to turn it...

Picture on this post shows it exactly: https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink?url=https%3A%2F%2Fforum%2Exda-developers%2Ecom%2Fshowthread%2Ephp%3Fp%3D76162730&share_tid=3734189&share_pid=76162730&share_fid=3793&share_type=t

I am using internet radio (TuneIn) for now, at some point I'll fiddle with DAB. And the roof microphone.

As for custom ROMs, I can't be doing with all that messing about, had my share of that with Android phones. Loads of fun if you've time and patience...

Cheers,
LP (Marc :) )

I had to laugh at this (I think they should drop the NOT)

With firmware device, you need to understand all the risks.
Neither I nor the website is not responsible for your actions and possibly killed devices!
Everything you do - you do at your own peril and risk.

Cheers Dazzler,
I have played with custom Roms a lot with android phones hence contemplating it but not doing it as very aware of the risks!!
I think the first thing to sort is the DAB reception.

Mic wise,  I fitted the external Mic at the side of the steering column as a temporary bodge. It is out of sight and reception/voice quality is now adequate. I will at some point sort out the roof mic (it is on the job list)

Hey
Can someone tell me if the OPs headunit is compatible with the i30 SE NAV camera?
I'm looking to swap out the headunit for this one but will it just plug and play with the existing camera?
Thanks

Hi all,
I'm wondering if anybody knows if the android units like the OP's use the roof mounted microphone or not, I'm looking to upgrade but I'd really like to keep as much of the original hardware in use as possible.

Hi there, I have a 2016 i30, i believe it’s the SENav trim as it has a factory satnav and reversing camera. I’m looking into replacing this as it is very unresponsive and fiddly to use whilst driving.

Will the unit spongey is reviewing work with the factory parking camera and sensors, and will all the steering wheel buttons work.

Thanks

Sponge question for you mate and apologies if already answered. I have just braught a 2013 plate i30 1.6 crdi blue classic. I think it has the gd 01 (it doesn't have Bluetooth). Will the stero you fitted in your car fit in mine and is it the most up to date?

Hey All,
Just a quick review on a recent upgrade/addition to my Late 2012 I30 CRDI Active I30. I spent a lot of time looking for information/videos on headunits and really struggled to find much info. As a disclaimer, I have no link to any of the sellers or products discussed beyond buying them.

The car originally had the basic original blue double din head unit and while the Bluetooth and voice support was present I found it a bit basic. So was after a bit of an upgrade especially as the warranty on the car had expired.

After looking at a whole load of units I went for a I30 specific, Android Oreo, Octocore 4gb RAM head unit. It is designed to only fit 2nd gen I30s (shaped to fit the dash). The unit is a modified version of a common type of unit, there are also different vehicle specific variants for different cars as well as slightly cheaper universal units. The unit came with a full wiring harness compatible with the I30s and was plug and play (no ISO conversion needed). The wiring harness also allowed USB and AUX plugs in the center console to continue to function. Link to Ebay Auction for HU
:link: AUTORADIO DVD/GPS/NAVI/BT/WIFI/ANDROID 8.0 4GB/DAB HYUNDAI i30 2011-2017 V5724 | eBay
(seller takes best offer and managed to knock a tenner off), Shipping was about 8 days, stock didn’t seem to be in the UK but came in reasonable time and was well packaged £300 all in so was a bit of a plunge.

While the advert states DAB and 3G it simply means it is compatible, not that the required hardware is included. I have however, bought a DAB+ adapter £25 and a DAB aerial splitter with amplifier as the window antenna are next to useless around us.
:link: USB DAB+ Digital Radio Receiver Box Amplified Aerial antenna Android headunit UK | eBay
(was the cheapest I could find with reasonable shipping) and works reasonably we are in the middle of nowhere in cumbria so DAB coverage and even FM coverage is spotty at best.
I already had USB powered WIFI Dongle with data SIM, so this provides data connectivity. You can use Bluetooth/WIFI tethering from your phone but it is a bit of a faff turning it on every time.

Install was reasonably straight forward there is a video of an i30 headunit removal on youtube below:
:link: remove stereo Hyundai Elantra 2011-2013 - YouTube
I recommend a soft plastic dish scraper to start to pop the silver trim off after which gently pulling and prizing (be brave) will see the rest come off. The AC controls require a good pull to get off once the 4 screws are out. The HU is a simple swap like all cars I have done in the past. (instructions with HU are next to useless). There are two USB ports on the back of the unit, none on the front, one is used to allow the lower centre console USB and AUX plug to work. The second USB is used on mine for the DAB+ radio.

Conclusion after 1 month of living with it.
I really like the unit, (although I would say that having just bought it) it was a bit a dive into the dark initially but have been really impressed. The unit is a bit slow to start from cold taking about 30sec, after that the unit goes into a sleep mode whenever the car is turned off and boots as quick as the standard head unit 2 seconds or so if the car has been sat for up to 10 hours or so, longer and the unit fully shuts down. Turning the engine over does not turn the headunit off.

The headunit is quick, and there is no noticeable lag when switching between apps. Even with multiple windows open. The headunit runs android Oreo and all the apps on the app store which would work on a phone work well on the headunit. The home screen seen in the images is “Car launcher Pro” this I feel is an improvement on the Android Oreo's built in car mode, which is not clear, Car Launcher Pro is a bit easier to move around and the speed indication is useful. Bluetooth works well with both handsfree functionality and audio streaming with full control over the phone (iPhone 7).

Having Waze and Spotify is great when driving and really improves the experience on long drives. I also have a Bluetooth OBD2 port scanner which pairs with the unit (£6). It is useful although I have not played around with this much and only plug it in if there is an issue. Having podcasts on the stereo is also a nice feature. I had a spare 120GB Micro SD card (The HU accepts 2 on the front) which I have all my music loaded onto. I access this with Black Audio Player which provedes a good library and play function.

DAB reception with the separate receiver, aerial splitter and powered amplifier works as well as any DAB radion I have ever had built into a car which tends to be a bit patchy in the part of cumbria we live in. The built in AM FM radio works well and is clear (as well as the original stereo).

The unit changes it lighting to headlights coming on, the two roatating knobs are lit like the standard unit, the screen is dimmable but is not matched to in car lighting levels and does not dim as much as standard headunit but can be blanked to darken the cabin.

Steering wheel controls work and are programable to do whatever you want with options for short and long press through the setting menu.

If anyone has any questions please ask! I seemed to of spent ages watching youtube videos and trying to find reviews and debating the purchase so am happy to help anyone else interested. Overall I would do the upgrade again as it has improved the in cabin experience no end and comparing it to my wifes i30 active it feels like a much more up market car (dont tell her that).

Any unit with a GD model number won’t fit/replace your satnav unit without further modifications.

GD-01-02-03-04 are all non navigation Cartronics units, the navigation models are made by a different company.

I have been hearing a lot the reference of gd-04 radio. Is it different than the gd-03 and can someone post a picture of this? I want to see it just out of curiosity!

Hi all,

I have a one question for Spongey

"There are two USB ports on the back of the unit, none on the front, one is used to allow the lower centre console USB and AUX plug to work. The second USB is used on mine for the DAB+ radio."

So you are saying that your lower center console with USB & AUX plug is working after the installation of this headunit? Did you receive the cable for that with an headunit or you buy some other cables?

Can you explain a bit more?

Thank You! :)

I need your help bro I'm going to pick up my new car from the dealership this afternoon, I am thinking of getting one of these units but I was wondering if all my factory inputs are still going to work after fitting it. Like my AUX, USB, and the bluetooth that comes from factory will still be working?
