Ok, so my little i30 have now done 237.000 km and I thought it was time to change the drivebelt. I searched this forum and found a drawing showing how to realease the tension on the drivebelt. Here's how (easy) it's done:

Remove the engine cover for better access.

I then took a photo of the routing of the drivebelt as my memory sometimes play games with me 



To release the tension of the drivebelt you need a 14mm socket on a solid bar or a socket wrench. The 14mm bolt is placed just below the tensionwheel. Place the tool as shown:



Force the tool backward towards the cabin and the tension is off the drivebelt and the drivebelt can be removed:



Fit new drivebelt and release the tension again. Job done. Thank you Hyundai for making this maintenance job so easy

Don't know, couldn't see any writing on the old one. I bought the car second hand with 126.000 km on the odo when 3 y/o but it sure wasn't new when I got the car....

Hmm, there's a OZ member with a GD that use the car for driving instructions. Last time, and that's quite a while ago, I saw a post from him he wrote 271.000 km IIRC. Must be close to or over 300.000 by now....

Superb instructions. This operation has the worst description in the HY service manual. " open the tensioner and change the belt". It's hard to crank the bolt if you don't know which is the right one. Im glad you did good instructions to this operation. I am going to chance my belt in couple of weeks. This makes it much more easier.

5PK1800 or 5PK1815. Went to parts store with original part number, but they were not able to tell which was the right one. So they sold me 5PK1810. It is 10mm too long or 5mm too short. Either way it works fine.

Excellent belt change directions Asterix

I changed mine with a poor quality chinese belt 40 000 kms ago, it disintegrated last week. Im lucky I had kept the old factory one in the boot with in spare wheel well.

A lesson learned for me, no cheap belts from the Korean part place at Deception bay Qld!. its now either dayco or genuine.

Also if you need to change the pulleys the bolts are torx t40 with the standard direction thread, the best thing i found to get in there is cheap allen key style torx keys. Its hard to get a torx male socket in there, very tight. The pulleys spin on a ferrule so the bolt dosent support them just keeps them on.

The pulley that was noisy and loose on mine was the top EP230, Seems to cop the most heat and work.

I bought a Gates 5pk1800, and I asked the mechanic to change it.
He said it was too short, but since it's the first time I've taken the car to him, I'm not sure whether to trust him or not, so I decided to have a go myself.

Not only I couldn't fit it, now I can't even fit the previous one.
in short, I'm an idiot.

Is there a trick to this? so little space to work
should I just buy an 1815?

5PK1811 is the OEM size for yours so you'll probably get away with an 1810, 1815 will fit. What size is your old belt? If it came off  it will go back on.

Have you compressed the belt tensioner fully and locked it into place with a metal pin say 3mm or a drill bit would do of suitable size? Have you routed the belt correctly?

I didn't know about locking it in place, I was struggling, trying to do all at once, with the  tools in the middle of it all!
I haven't measure mine, and it's pretty worn and no markings but eyeballing about 1.5cm longer than the 1800.
I guess 1810 is closer to 1811 than 1815.
I'll have a go tomorrow at installing the old one, and order the part online.
Can you believe Repco wanted ~$85 for it?
Ebay it's about $25 inc shipping from the uk for a dayco.

Ok, went to supercheap, and measured it.
It's a 1811.
I installed the old one back for the time being, It wasn't that easy.
even with the locked pin, to get the belt into the right groove, I had to push it further than the pin lock, though it did make things easier.
I'm considering whether i should get a 1815 rather than a 1810. brand new 1810 might even be more difficult to install

I agree with you both. Some Chinese suppliers have good quality parts and fast free postage.
I used to have an account with Repco, but they have become a variety store with HIGH priced parts out back.
Supercheap also mix a lot of junk out front with some ok products, but they are much more competitive and helpful with spare parts.
Burson is the go to place for the tradesman. You need an account to get the best price. But smooth talking helps.

Crazykev's schematic (above) will be sufficient. Not a big job, as long as you know how to route the belt properly. Asterix 's explanation will make it obvious when you look at it.
