Title: I30 brakes r makin grating sounds
Post by: Zhangster on February 19, 2009, 20:28:18
Hi guys

im from scandinavia so bare with my english..  :D

anyway i got a big issue with my brakes...

i have drove about 44000km in my i30 with no problems.... then winter came and i put on my winter wheels.... a month later my brakes began to grate... and i felt some unbalance in the break pedal at first and i rushed to my local hyundai shop and they checked em (brakes has lots of brake materials atleast half left ) and cleaned em.

didt work to well.. tops one 1 day.... so i returned to my hyundai shop again... and he said it might work if he ( dunno the word for it but .. basiclly he cut some of the metal off the dishes to make em balanced again.)   all 4 wheels.....  for 3-4 weeks it was okay.. its not unbalanced anymore... or it does not feel that way when i brake.... but the noice is still there... at first i though it was the rear brakes... so i did not use the handbreak when i park.... it seems to help a little but not much... after a few breaks it stops makin grating noises.... but 5 mins parking and its back again.. dont know what to do?

lastly i have noticed its like my brake pedal is a bit fluffy..soft... long movement before the brakes r kicking in..(i feel its changing from trip to trip. some days it feels normal and some r not)  dont know if i just got crazy now cause i have these all other brake problems.?

anyway any ideas what to do or solutions i would like to know.... thx in advantage

dpo

First of all, welcome to the forum dpo :D

...( dunno the word for it but .. basiclly he cut some of the metal off the dishes to make em balanced again.)..

Sounds like he might have "skimmed" the disks.

You might have some air trapped in the hydraulic braking system. That would surely make the brake pedal feel different from trip to trip.

Maybe others might have some ideas?

This is because they cutted the brake pads to make them balanced. They are thinner and thus further away from the brake disks. That's why it's 'fluffy' ;)

Is there grit between the disc and pad?

Has the disc been scored?

With wheel raised the wheel does not rotate freely?

Any of the above as yes go to dealers

Hi dpo, sounds like they machined your disc rotors to make them true, to stop the brake wobble ( for a better word ) problem is they have machined the rottor so the surface is flat and should be true,BUT the put or have left the same brake pads in, so your pads have warn into the old disc rottor but now you have a new flat rottor surface but the pads will not be perfectly flat and true so less contact surface than before. the grinding sound could be from the warn disc pads, sometimes old disc pads can wear so that the outer edge does not contact the rottor and you get some disc pad over the outter edge of the disc rottor, when you use your brakes it makes a noise as the overhang of pad contacts the outter edge of the rottor, this is not normal for a new car but possible.
Also check your new wheels are not contacting the brake calliper.
I think you should buy new disc pads so you have two flat surfaces for more contact.
good luck

thx bud..
sounds logic to me what u points out there... ill try to talk my local hyundai shop and see what they say..
im wondering if i can get some better brake dishs and calliper for it? racing ones? and where? ...........i tend to drive my car like i stole it  pedel to the metal. .. might be a bit rough to my brakes... :)

another thing.... what does ppl think about the standard audio system? sound quality ect..
for me its awsome.. i was very surprised it played that well... :) and does anyone know which brand it is? or its hyundai own radio/speakers?

We have a Member that compeats in the Targa Rally dow Tasmania were Dazz is, he spoke of a better compound of brake pads, but i think he uses stock dishs. i'm sure there would be better dish rottors out there. i think a larger diamiter would be what you would want just you would need a compleat kit as the brake caliper would need a new mount, also would need maybe 18" wheels. i would expect good race brakes to have higher wear rate too so would think 25,000 to 30,000 interval to change out pads if you use the brakes a lot.

Hm..this might help you...

I haven't read all the posts above so I apologise if somebody had written this already.. Last time I was on my Hyundai dealer (in Slovenia), they asked me if I have problems with brakes..

The lady that works there told me, that many i30 owners come complaining (at approx 20.000-40.000 km) because of an annoying grating sound of the brakes - she said that i30 have some problems with the material of brake pads and that they start to grate eventually - and that there is no way to solve this than to change them?

Maybe that is not the issue with your i30 but it might help?

accim
