Petrol i30 blowing smoke #2

we had a similar thing to the OP happen to us today in our 2013 i30

i put my foot down, look behind and there is a huge, i mean huge, cloud of thick grey/white smoke. pull over immediately and smell the smoke which reaks of burned plastic. leave the car running for a few minutes and the smoke is still coming out but nowhere near as thick. let the car cool down a bit and drove off, once the car warmed up a bit more and i put the foot down again it returned but not as bad. while i gave the car a couple of good revs we found liquid was coming out of the exhaust pipe. temperatures were fine, coolant didnt have oil in it, oil did smell like ULP and was a little bit overfilled from last service which was 3 weeks ago. the car is being sent back to the dealership monday

the part i cant explain is the burned plastic smell of the initial smoke cloud

Welcome, Interesting 1st post. Plastic is made from oil...

Maybe something is overheating and melting something plastic, but what??

thanks for having me. im thinking hyundai wont find anything wrong, they will put it dont to bad fuel. before i drove it yesterday, my mum let the tank get really empty, <20kms on the display so roughly 1.5 litres, im thinking water to fuel ratio in the contaminated fuel would be more.

is it possible that the contaminated fuel has stripped the lubricating properties, maybe scoured up an injector head which has broken off, gone past the valves and burnt up in the combustion chamber?

Should look at the complete airway path from start to finish. There can't be anything after the combustion process that could contribute as it would do it when new. Air filter component or plastic after the air filter, perhaps.

i did suspect that as well but didnt find anything broken or missing.

i noticed that the hot oil smelt alot like unleaded. ive never noticed this before on other cars but it is this not unusual?

If your oil was fairly fresh, yes it would be abnormal. However excess petrol into the motor won't cause the blue smoke or oil smell, so I don't think this symptom is related at all. The oil should NEVER be overfilled. I believe you mentioned that it was. Try removing some after the car has sat overnight and set to the correct dipstick level.

That's pretty crazy without our help. I think the engine would have completely sh*t itself if that happened!

Well the car is ready for pickup tomorrow so it mustnt have been anything major.

at this stage, without looking over the car or hearing anything from mum i would assume..

the problem was bad fuel from MOGAS at Adelaide airport and having the tank low too may have caused more water to reside in the lines under low pressure. since i put the foot to the floor it must have charged the lines and collected all residual water.

still cant figure out the burnt plastic smell. maybe we will never know.

ill keep everyone informed of any updates

This has happened to me twice as well over a period of 12 months or so, both times when I really floored it but the smoke disappeared after 30 seconds or so..
Not mechanical here so I just thought it was ?? a build up of something lol..... that got blown out in the heavy acceleration, oil or something lol... (told ya very technical)

Apart from that the car is perfect..

Probably ok, but if it's not typical of your driving style there may be residual oil cleared out by increased oil pump pressure.

Thats what I reckon... lol Only times it happened was when I REALLY floored it. Apart from those 2 times (in 2 1/2 years) no problems whatsoever...

Sometime I notice those hooning around in a 200SX or old Civic will have a huge cloud of smoke when the floor it... Probably unburnt fuel? (Or just a shit heap ready to blow)

Depends on your driving style, these aren't supposed to be race cars getting redlined in every gear

Today I just witnessed a Petrol GD i30 blow so much smoke on WOT that I thought it was a diesel!

There was smoke everywhere!

Probably a bit longer than a diesel would on WOT. But really thick smoke, it wasn't a blue smoke. It looked more like unburnt fuel

Hey guys, I have a theory about these smoke blowing events which are pretty well reported. I'm running an oil catch can which collects PCV gas from the tappet cover. This device separates the oil and collects it for draining later on. I installed it myself as an afterwork modification. I've monitored the exact amount of oil collected vs kms run. I've collected 90mls in 10000kms. In my opinion, it is possible that some of this oil can collect in either the PCV line, or the variable inlet manifold just waiting for either the critical quantity or you to floor it (or a combination of both) and enter the combustion chamber for the big smoke up. I'm reasonably confident that this is whats happening. I doubt VERY much that bad fuel is to blame. Thats just an easy excuse for the mechanic to fob you off for a minor design fault which is most likely harmless except a red face.
