Personally, if I bought a second hand one, I'd still want to strip it down, check it and rebuild it.
So in that case, might as well do the same to the original transmission.
I wouldn't bother rebuilding a good condition low km box, they come with warranties anyway.

I understand that but I'd rather know what I've got.
Just me.   :)

Picking up the car from local mechanic this morning.  Report is that there doesn't seem to be any problems anymore. Possibly hyundai service cleared an electrical fault and that was the problem? The transmission was serviced and the oil was noticeably lower than it should be and not clean,  needing new oil. Possibly the valves getting stuck due to sticky oil caused the transmission?  We will drive it some km with fingers crossed

We have 2 autos, At the required time, I had the oil removed AND THE TORQUE CONVERTER flushed at the same time. Running smooth a silk. 2nd car due in about 1 year's time.

So $14k for an easily removed electrical fault. This requires further investigation IMO.

Glad it's resolved. :victory:

I had a gasket replaced in the auto under warranty. It hasn't been dropping fluid has it?

As an aside, the only auto service that Hyundai do is to drop the oil (I had a full flush in mine, elsewhere). I wonder if perhaps they might lack expertise (or desire) to diagnose the problem and the big bill was to get you to go elsewhere.

Wouldn't be the first time a big quote was submitted for a job that wasn't really wanted.

Both, it would be easy money for them, just shows how easy it can be to  be separated from your money to the tune of $14500 if you haven'f got your wits about you, poor show from that dealership.

The mechanic I saw recommended getting major services ahead of what hyundai schedule. From what I could find the transmission wasn't meant to be touched before either 120km or 8 years.  If this fault resurfaces I think this will be a good point to make to hyundai. Parts really should fail before their first service.

From memory there is a service at 90k (which is part of the reason the fixed price is so high auto fluid and major service). Hyundai just drop the fluid and replace it. I went to a transmission specialist and had a full flush.

A smarter service schedule would have brought forward the auto to the 75k, smoothes out the prices and probably better for the auto too.

Thats a bit of a high price! My dealer only wanted $11500 for a new one  :crazy1:

My first trans went to 250000km. Got one with 25k on it and it needed a valve body only 50k later  :fum:

Ps: I'm on here looking for front control arm kits. Or maybe just ball joint and bushes.

What did the 1st and 2nd repairs cost you Craig? Hopefully we can help you with that other stuff... Post a query in appropriate section or general discussion if you haven't already.  :goodjob:

The first trans was whining badly. The replacement was $1200 and cost $800 to fit.
They told me it had 25000km on it. 50000km later it was banging into reverse and would take about 5 seconds to find reverse. The valve body was new from ebay and was $1100 from memory. It was about $600 to fit.

I hit 317000km today.

You did well, but still a lot of money!

I suppose it was a catch 22 (you would have got nothing for the car if you sold it broken) but you still must be pretty attached to it all the same!

I've said it before but my old Holden Barina had 420,000k on the clock when I sold it and it was still on the original clutch...  :D

It's my driving school car. The longer it lasts the better.
i fitted a second hand alternator 8 months ago and had to replace it last weekend.
New ones are $550 and second hand are $130. Together with labour, I should of got a new one :(

Hindsight is a wonderful thing!  :undecided: At least you can probably claim repairs on your tax?

A warranty is actually only indicative. You may have claim under the Trades Practices Act to have your car repaired either under full or partial warranty. Talk to a lawyer or Chamber Magistrate. Likewise, call Hyundai H/O and complain (nicely) and ask what can be done. Speak to your local Motoring organization (NRMA, RACQ...) as well.

I had valve body replaced at 116000 km couple of days ago (2009 SLX Diesel-had car from new with dealer servicing), one year after warranty expired, at my cost of $2600. I am a little angry as I had symptoms leading to failure explained to the dealer when car was still under warranty, but was always told that they could not replicate the fault. The lag in reverse was present in the trans from new and that was supposed to be normal for that car. Well now with new valve body it does not happen and it appears that the car gained considerable power with extremely smooth gear changes. Looks like I was told something that was not exactly the truth. Very disappointed with the service. Friend of mine (2010 Diesel) had his gearbox replaced under warranty, but the new one has a lag going into reverse. I am wondering if this is not first indication of something not right.

Very disappointing and frustrating for you! Also a worry for your friend. I'm guessing you have nothing in writing about your gearbox complaints while still in warranty?  :undecided:
