I bought I30  1.6 CRDI  in 2013 which at that time still under 5 years new car warranty, within 2 years I had 2 minor warranty repairs and once recall repair. On Tuesday 4th Oct 2016 on the way to work, the automatic transmission was showing up faulty sympton, drive gear not engaging properly, once I arrived at work, the car has no reverse gear and the engine check light lid up. I rang up Hyundai Customer Care and I was told that the car is out of warranty by about 7 months. After doing some research on the internet and talking to some gearbox specialist, it came to my attention that the automatic transmission fault I am currently experienced is very common with the i30 diesel MY 2010-2011 due to faulty transmission valve body. The Hyundai dealer across the road quoted for overhaul gearbox with 1 year warranty for  $5483 and new gearbox for $13307 including labor for remove/refit !!!

I have been trying to get Hyundai to pay for the cost of the repair as I don't think it is acceptable for the gear box only last for 5 years, they refused the claim as they say the car is out of warranty !!! I have sent them no of emails to the case manager and left several messages to call back. I have no response from the case manager from Hyundai Care ( should be Hyundai don't care ).. look like I have to pay for the hefty repair bill  I will never buy Hyundai again... TV Ads should say I30 as worst car of the year not best car of the year !!!

If it's definitely just the VB why not replace it? It's accessible from the pan and gearbox could stay in.  I have a 2008 CRDi and the VB has already been replaced by the previous owner out of wty. It's got 190K maybe around the 140 -150k it was done I've misplaced the document now but from memory $1300 for the VB and the $2500 total.

Koraps in korea show them around $650 USD ($850AUD)

Pretty rediculous really. The other thing I've read is the harnesses to the VB can have fractured solder joints. I'd want to know they were not the cause first as the VB does not include the harness from what I can tell

Here in Australia we have statutory warranty regardless of the manufacturer's warranty. A transmission would be expected to last the life of a car. The life of a car would be expected to be more than 5.5 years.

This fault has made the car undriveable. Hyundai would be expected to at least pay for part if not all of the repair. That's the theory. Enforcing it is the difficult task.

I agree the cost of a new box i ridiculous compared to a new car, but who define what a cars lifetime is..?

If you take that statutory warranty at face value you could claim a 20 y/o gearbox should be replaced by manufacturer..?

Yes the law gets more dubious with increasing age. But what is clear is that the lifetime of a car in Australia is not 5 years.

The law is one thing. Enforcing it is another. Particularly with cars, manufacturers can string it out for months to the point where the consumer gives up.

There are plenty of people who have had a warranty claim refused by the so-callled leading brands after just 3 years.

I wouldn't trust any car manufacturer to be lenient on an out-of-date warranty claim. You could so easily jump out off the frying pan into the fire by buying another brand of car next time.  Reliability is a lottery.

So, you are saying that I have to buy a ticket to have a chance of winning the lottery?  I've been doing it wrong all of these years, no wonder I have been disappointed.

Back to the topic though.  It is unfortunate that it has failed, but that is one of the pitfalls of buying a second hand car, or having a car outside of warranty.  As for lifetime warranties, there was a case when I was a young officer in the RAAF and the engineers purchased some bargain tools with a lifetime warranty.  After a short period of time, the tools failed.  The engineers went to make a warranty claim and were told by the company that the "lifetime warranty" was for the life of the tool.  Therefore the warranty didn't exist anymore.  Obviously tools weren't purchased from that company any longer.

Lesson learnt I will never buy a Hyundai car again old or new !!!  We have Mitsubishi outlander 2007 model more than 9 years now, only 2 repairs due to wear and tear done on the car since then 1st repair replacing the radiator plastic neck 2nd replacing timing belt it has done 144K .. no issue whatsoever with the gear box ... Hyundai definitely got the flick from me ...

I can understand how you feel after your experience. I know it doesn't help you, but our experience on this forum over more than 8 years would suggest the i30 is still generally more reliable than most of its competitors ( even more expensive ones)

From memory this started in 2012 so predates the vehicle.

I do note the distance the vehicle has travelled has been omitted. This would be a very relevant factor in any assessment.

I had a Falcon that decided to merge the transmission fluid and coolant well within the 5.5 years quoted above.... Ford's response was less than impressive, despite EVERY Falcon having done it....

Mate , sorry to hear that you have this problem, but I think Constipated is testing the Statutory Warranty law by claiming a transmission should last the life of the vehicle.
"Life of the vehicle" would vary wildly, for example; between outback and city use, or old lady and hoon driving.

The obvious remedy is to crawl under the car and change the VB yourself for a few dollars, or go back to the dealer and possibly spend more than your repaired car will be worth if you sell it.

Possibly they could film the 1000s of i30s that travel our roads each day and record them as they all break down and cause traffic chaos.  Me thinks it will be a long wait!
