Title: 2009 radio won't turn on after battery charge
Post by: boonergooner on April 26, 2021, 23:57:33
Hello all, need some help!
My 2009 i30 has stood for a few months, a few weeks ago I discovered the battery was dead so I took it off the charge it up, I left it off the car for a few weeks and when I put it back on my stereo will now not work at all, nothing on screen. I have checked the fuse marked audio and clock as the handbook appears to say it's connected to the audio? you can see from the pictures the audio fuse inside a yellow clip that  I now know I should have pulled out when parking the car up! The audio fuse looked intact but I changed it for another 15a fuse that I knew was working but this did not change anything. Can anyone give me any advice on whether I need to do something with the ignition key or if there's an internal fuse thats accessable or is the stereo knackered?

The handbook seems to suggest that the radio needs resetting and refers to chapter 4 but I hit a dead end with it.

Also, if I need to replace the unit, there are several used  ones on the auction site but will I need a code? I have also looked on the auction site but I can't find anyone in this country that will supply a code?!

Thanks.

Im not familiar with these specifically, but i do remember reading something in the radio manual about security codes. Perhaps when it lost power the anti theft mechanism kicks in and you need to use a certain sequence or security code to start it?

I would need to dig the manual out when i get some spare time at home to confirm

Hello, thank you for your reply, unfortunately the screen does not power up at all, so completely blank, so can't input a code if it were required.

Fairly sure there's a soft reset function using the 1 and 6 buttons in a certain combination. At work right now but I'll see if I can dig it up (if it's there and I'm not dreaming, which I usually am when at work :snigger:)

Press and hold 1 and 4 for three seconds, then while holding 4, press 1 four times quickly. It should show you your firmware version. Press 6, then use the right side knob to select Europe region and push it in to apply.

just looking at the fuse pictured, that is not pushed in all the way. Is the dome light working? as that is the other fuse on the other side of the yellow holder

Apologies, I should have taken another picture with the clip pushed in, I  took the picture after I had checked the fuses and had not yet pushed the clip back in fully which I did with no success.

I had a 2007 and took battery off.

Didn't require code.

Just a thought.
If you say it isn't switching on have you checked that the dark button hasn't been activated so the screen is black/off when in fact the unit is on but not tuned into any station.

Try cd disc to see if that activates unit.

Yeah that one caught me out when we first got the car, accidently hit a random button while driving and most of the screen went blank. Luckily found the  screen on again. Doofus  :head_butt:

Thank you for that although I have pressed that button and all the buttons numerous times to no affect, I will try and insert a CD to see if that makes a difference.

I have seen several used radios on the auction site for about £40 or £50 which is not too bad, the fact that I renewed the battery last year without needing a code and you have said the same thing will hopefully mean I won't need one, although it won't be the original radio?
Also, I can't find anyone selling codes on the auction site might also mean one is not needed?

Cheers.

My partner's 2011 car has the same radio, and on a few occasions the battery has been disconnected or gone flat. It's never been necessary to enter a code of any sort to get it working again, just needs the clock resetting and re-tune the radio presets.

I think there is a 30A? fuse on the back of the head unit as well, might be worth a check if you haven't already.

FYI - This is the security page on the 2011 i30 stereo instruction manual. Unfortunately there weren't any troubleshooting pages for a blank screen that i could see.

Hi, thanks for that, I have checked both the 'audio' fuse and the 'clock' fuse as the owners manual states that the clock fuse is for clock/audio, see picture.
Are these the two fuses you are referring to? Also someone mentioned a fuse on the ba k of the radio, but I can't see an external fuse in this picture? Thanks.

The fuse would be on the inline power feed behind the stereo.

Update:

So today I went through every fuse in the side of the dash, every fuse checked out intact.
So I proceeded to remove the radio/stereo from the dash, there was no in line fuse that I could see behind the head unit.

Is there anyway I can check if power is reaching the head unit, is it as simple as looking at the blue section of the plug in the picture below and is the red wire  the live and a black wire being a negative? I have a multi-meter and can check for 12v  (other than that I don't really know how to operate it!)

Also, is there any way I can apply 12 volts to the head unit to see if it powers up out of the car? Obviously there are no markings on the back of the headunit to sate which pin is for what.

Then,  unless someone has any other bright ideas? I'm going to have to assume the head unit is dead and purchase a used one, probably off The auction site, and hope that I don't need a security code.

One last thing, having removed, checked and replaced all the fuses and removed the head unit, when I drove the car back into the car park to park up the airbag warning light is on!!
I need to recheck the fuses for "A/Bag" 15a and "A/Bag Ind" 10a to see if they blew while checking them but is there any other reason the light may have come o ?

Thank you all for your time.
