My 2009 i30 1.6 CRDi turbo has been whistling louder lately.
A friend at work had the same issue on his Nissan, he replaced the turbo, on his old turbo a small piece of one of the exhaust side turbine blades was missing.

I have ordered a new turbo cartridge from Melett and when it arrives I will swap it over.
The only worry I have is seized bolts!
I will let you know of the "result" soon.

You could try some penetrating oil when the unit has cooled, preferably overnight.

That's a short life for a turbo....

We think a piece of carbon in the exhaust may have broken off and damaged a blade.

7 hours later and the turbo cartridge has been replaced.
There is nothing obviously wrong with the old turbo cartridge other than it just must have gone out of balance.

I assume that has fixed the issue? What was the approximate cost if you don't mind sharing?

What actually is the cartridge? Just the internal bit that spins I am guessing....
