Hey Everyone, Hoping someone can help shed some light onto our problem child of an i30....
its a 2010 fd 1.6 5 speed man crdi....
Have had it since new and apart from that mysterious vibration between 1500 and 1900 rpm that random other people have had and we just learnt to live with...
 its now added a kangaroo/bunny hop to the list.... :crazy2: :crazy2: :crazy1:
Basically its as if a learner is driving it and dumped the clutch giving that jerking motion of on and off throttle.....
My wife told me of it and i of course said it was just her bad driving..... Till i kangarood through a shopping centre carpark like an idiot.  :happydance:  :head_knock:

took it for a drive again before and its on light application of the throttle that its very noticeable. Even more in second gear (im guessing because seconds the perfect conditions of power/torque etc)  but will do it in any gear as well ( havent been game to try it in reverse)_

It also does it if you back off the throttle ie youre heading along at 60 and take your foot straight off the accelerator it will start doing its bunny bounce....bah
I had a mobile mech. come out today and have a look over it and testdrive while servicing it..
He said he looked at the engine and trans mounts and they seem fine, no error codes on the scan tool etc and commented it was very weird, and at a guess recomended I should take it to a transmission specialist :(
Should I try anything else first?
Or does anyone know a good hyundai mech north brisbane wise?
Cheers

Hi Steve, Sounds like clutch to me. Certainly not a common complaint. Would definitely be embarrassing!

cheers Dazzler i was thinking along that line as well, I wonder if changing the fluid and fiddling with the adjustment would help?

Just read back to my very first post and i wrote way back then it was hopping a little at the top of second gear.... that was way back over 140thou kms away now... :( in heinsight i should of persisted with fairtrading and hyundai those many years ago i suppose. but it probably would of eventuated into this again anyway...

\Anyone have any insight into changing the clutch on these things? I feel im going to need to go on a eat nothing diet for the next year to be able to fit my hands inside the engine bay .... :(
Just noticed that cruise isnt coming on now too... im assuming there is some sort of switch to deactivate cruise in there somewhere too.

If clutch related i had similar on my fd but only in damp weather.

As you released clutch it would do it once only.  Rest of day ok.
Next ok but if damp overnight it would sometimes do it.

Car now 8.5 yo same clutch and told the odd occasion.

Never bothered to replace clutch.

I s'pose as a real long shot you could always try the 'disconnect the battery for 20 minutes' trick.... sounds to me like you've got nothing to loose   :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

Nothing to do with clutch or transmission IMO.

It's electrical/sensor related. As your cc doesn't work I would concentrate about brake light switch or ABS sensor.

If an ABS sensor sends signal about one of the wheels rotating different speed than normal, the ESP will try to reduce throttle. I don't know if your OBD reader can read the ABS sensors in realtime...?

Try to remove the wheels and have a look at the ABS sensor rings. Is one of them cracked..?  Try to clean the space between the sensor and sensor rings with airpressure.

Well I havent had a chance to pull the wheels off anf check the abs rings, but i disconnected the abs fuse and test drove it... no change.
Tested it with esc off... no change...
Seems to be a little worse when the car is hot.
Cleaned throttle body intake hoses etc changed airfilter as i had a spare..
I did however notice a little bit of oil inside the turbo intake hose from the pcv venting thing.
And more oil on the intercooler exit side. Only a drop or two, but isnt that a bad sign too?

Tested battery and it seems fine also disconnected it for half hour etc. No change.
Checked all the visible connectors and fuses I could see  (in the eng bay)
Im thinking it might be related to fuel side of things? Might go try some of that diesel injector cleaner and see if that helps.

I did notice also a few months or so ago the clutch doesnt need to be pressed in to start which is awesome!!!
the little microswitch is stuck in the pressed in position, no idea how to replace it, but there werent any related dramas because of it in the previous months?? Cruise worked and drove smooth.

Might save up and find a reputable hyundai dealership to have a look??.

I quite like the idea of having to push the clutch in to start the car (can't see the hardship)

Wonder if that is related to the bunny hopping?  :undecided:

Well i twisted and scratched up most of my hand and arm and found the lower clutch switch (near the floor) isnt popping back out, hence not needing the clutch start :)
And the upper switch is also sruck in the in position (so the computer must be thinking the clutch is never depressed???
I tested both switches and found this grey lubricant crap had been sprayed onto both of them??? Like a lithium spray grease?? Both switches have had their internal springs have sheared in half.
They both appear to be simple on or off position switches so i might look into a better aftermarket alternative?,
I hooked both of them up on my test bench and found that they with a little vibration they would randmoly activate.
Disconnected both clutch switches and hooked them temporarily into two toggle switches and the problem is gone????
 :whistler:
Maybe its just luck? But as soon as i disconnected the lower switch it smoothed out.

Does anyone know how much im going to have to sell of my soul to buy one from hyundai? I forgot to ask them after I asked how much for a new taillight.....$500  :crazy1:wtf???

Might investigate a universal style switch?.

But for some reason the cruise control still isnt working?
Was thinking about replacing the brake switch as well? However it seems to be working ok.?
or Could there be a neutral position sensor for the manual gearbox somewhere?

Well it appears that didnt fix the problem..... $160 later and the problem magically returns.... as if its saying haha spend more money.
I really think its not the clutch or transmission now.....

Wondering about the electronic throttle???

I reckon it could be the electronic throttle... A friend of mine has a Renult Clio with the same symptoms and it's the electronic throttle... Except the part alone for that is $1200 and a 4 week wait from Europe.
