Title: Headlight globe...which one do I need???
Post by: Pikapolonica on March 15, 2023, 21:36:41
Starting up the car this morning, I noticed on the dash an orange triangle with an exclamation mark.  Had NFI what it meant.  I just happened to scroll the menu to see that my front right headlight has blown.....I mean seriously, what else can go wrong this week with my car (battery needed replacement on Monday).

Lucky it wasn't too dark this morning, but don't fancy driving at night with one headlight, so really need to get it sorted ASAP.

I have no idea what I need to get.  I also know they're a PITA to install.  Do you think somewhere like Autobarn or Supercheap will install the globe?  Don't fancy taking it back to Huyndai as it'll cost $$$.

Do you have the owners manual? I found a copy online and if it has halogen bulbs, it's a 55W H7 bulb. It also has instructions on changing it, which doesn't mention having to pull the headlamp out. I have a GD version and it's easier to change the bulb than on the 1st generation FD. No need to remove the headlamp, but I don't know what it's like on the PD. I'd be surprised if Hyundai went back to making it harder.

In my previous i30, it was very hard to change the globe.  Yet to do this one.

Don't have manual to hand, I'm at work.

Vanessa,
Firstly, keep the manual in your glovebox - it does have handy info in it and does you little good at home. :-)

Secondly, you did not say if it was the high or low beam bulb that was out?  I have the same car and the low beams are H7 and the HB are HB3.

Thirdly, both are in fact quite easy to change and need no special skills. I am sure there are Youtube tuts on doing this (general ones with basic info that applies to all models e.g dont tuoch glass of the bulb with your skin) - but at SCA definitely you can pay a small amount extra and they will walk out and do for you. Not sure abuot Repco, Autobarn but you can always check online or ask politely and as it's super easy they will likely do if not busy.

Sidenote - flat batteries suck and you're left in a jam where you often have to buy a pretty crap battery from the roadside assist people at a full ticket price. Do yourself a favour and buy a 4amp intelligent battery charger. Once a month pop it on your battery.  It will maximise the lifespan of your battery as driving alone will NOT treat a lead acid battery as it likes.

Once your battery gets to 4-5yrs of life - go and get a free battery test at SCA/Repco - they use a capacitance tester which is the only way to see the true health of your battery (as voltage, loads tests etc can be misleading) - once you can see your battery is getting into the so-so condition part of its life, keep a look out for a sale on quality batteries and replace. You get what you pay for with batteries.

I'm assuming it's just the low beam. You just need to twist off the plastic interior cover, put to one side, twist off the H7 bulb holder, which has a wire connected to it, remove the dead bulb, place to one side. Using a glove or piece of tissue paper etc - place the new H7 bulb in the plastic holder. Then I usually place this down and test it's working in the ignition - as you can put the polarity in back the front - in which case you just remove and replace the bulb after spinning it 180 degrees. Then when confirmed working, gently place it back into it's slot and twist in - this is the trickiest part - but if you look at the front to align right and just do gently waiting till you feel it line up it's easy.

Then check again it's working, if not remove and redo - if ok - then put the plastic cover back on.

Bulbs normally come in packs of 2 - place the spare one in your boot cavity etc - so you can do when needed again.  Sounds hard but once you do you will feel more confident in doing on this and future vehicles you have so I would encourage you to TRY and do will be frustrating but worth it in the end. :-)

PS. This video shows it quite well - it's an older i30 but still the process is identical. I know that the space on the PD is slightly better & easier to work in than this but it's a tiny bit trickier on the pax side - but still very doable without needing to remove any extra components.

Manual is in car...I'm at work.  Didn't exactly have time to read it, as light only came on today.

Thanks for the other tips though.

Pictures in PD(e) Manual are not great.
Also there seems to be two or three variations of PD(e) headlight described. I don't know if that is also true for Korean built PD's for Australia.
Careful not to drop the plastic cover into the engine bay when you remove it.
(In UK you can download a .pdf Manual direct from My Hyundai website)

Now to be honest the battery was an expense you could have planned for  (which I say as we have same yr cars and I literally just did exactly this) - alas the issue was you ended up with a pretty ordinary one(RACV) at top market rates - I paid $230 for a vastly superior Century DIN65LHX MF (which is well beyond what you need as I have a diesel which needs higher spec battery, so you could have gone with something in the $150-180 range when on sale). And could have been less via discounted gift cards/cashback etc. You can plan ahead on nearly all consumables e.g tyres, oil, battery etc - things you KNOW with complete certainty will need replacing and roughly when.

Haha and you seem determined to spend more than you need to - those Philips ones are good but an enhanced version that will give more light but not last as long as a 'standard H7' bulb.  So you can spend $90 if you like....or you can just buy one of these  for $13(confirm that it's a 55w bulb first as info is not stated):

If it's NOT a 55w one then next step up is these for $20 for one:

FWIW Autobarn will at some stores fit the products - a surcharge may apply. :-)

Am I supposed to be psychic and know when my battery is about to die?

And that globe was just a quick Google.

:-/
'Being psychic' has nothing to do with it - it's basic, entry level common sense when driving a 6yr old car where the battery is perhaps 7yrs old.  Regretably for me I've already given you multiple ways to avoid this happening again.

You know for a 15yr member here with 300+ posts who's been repeatedly moaning about having unexpected expenses, you're awfully caustic when total strangers take time out of their busy days to try and assist you with not only your current gripe but also try to assist you in avoiding/negating future ones.

No dramas, so now thats been established I'll leave the 'pleasure' of assisting you further & in the future to others with more masochistic tendencies than I.
