I currently have the 2011 i20 Active hatch with 5 speed manual, but I really want to upgrade to the i30. However, I having trouble deciding whether to go Petrol or Diesel. I do a lot of in town trips for work and a couple of 30-40km trips per fortnight. I am after fuel economy.

I choose Diesel manual every time regardless of city / country cycle. I'm consuming 4.1L/100km.
Can't do that with petrol.

I don't think diesel will suit your purpose. Short trips like you're describing don't allow the engine to heat up and get to its most efficient state for a diesel. The 30-40km trip would be OK. My 5 min drive to work is 10.2l/100. It's just not enough time.
