My i30 GD with 115k miles is making a bit of a light rattle from the alternator. Garage quoted £360 for new part (aftermarket) + labour. What are peoples thoughts on which is best out of me buying a new aftermarket part or having my original one refurbished?

Europarts have 2 on their site circa £320 and £280.

Have they said what the issue is and whether bearing or the electrical unit.

Presume still charging.

Is there an auto electrician nearby for a 2nd opinion?

I asked and the mechanic who looked said needed a whole new unit. Surprised given it's giving 14.8v out and the battery is sat at 13.5v with the engine off, the only issue is that it's becoming a little noisy at times, not terribly...

I know sometimes the Kia parts are cheaper than Hyundai, anyone know of alternative part numbers that are suitable for this? Very expensive alternator, Hyundai tell me it's 37300-2A850

The noise might be coming from the alternator pulley which has a freewheel mechanism built into the hub. That can be replaced independently of the alternator. I wouldn't be too concerned about fitting a reconditioned alternator as long as it has a decent warranty

Sounds exactly like my problem! Definitely could just be the pulley if the alternator still charging/working.

A lot cheaper to just replace the pulley, otherwise the entire alternator would guarantee it.

Weird, I have just replied to a post by mtotheframe, mine making similar sound, the alternator pulley should be checked when serviced in case it needs replacing, I have bought an pulley for £30 and a pulley kit set for £18.

You can get refurbished Valeo units from E-bay, Kia parts will also fit.

Aparently the 37300-2A800 and 37300-2A805 will also fit according to Autodoc.co.uk.

Have you had it done yet and which route did you go with?
