Yes we do have the kit. As an avid follower of "Police Stop!", "Police, camera, action" and "Cops With Cameras" I can attest to the fact that they are used extensively around the land. After all, our TV shows couldn't possibly be exaggerating their deployment, could they?

we Victorians have had those number plate recognition cameras in police cars since January. they also have a camera that records you and what your saying when they pull you over,like the ones the cops have in the USA.

Looking at the figures quoted in that article....there are 44,421 unregistered vehicles, of those, there were 224 crashes in 2009 involving an unregistered vehicle.
How many of these unregistered vehicle's driver's actually caused the accident? They don't say...it could just as well have been the registered vehicle's driiver's fault. 

Me thinks it's more about the lost revenue.....

And unregistered means no third party insurance so if they cripple or kill someone there's no insurance company to pay out.

and if there is an accident were one of the drivers has been drinking alcohol,then the insurance is also void.

there isn't a law in Victoria that states you must have insurance on your motor vehicle. you must have the tac insurance that is combined in your annual car registration payment.
this is what i paid for my most recent renewall.
tac charge.         $397.00
registration fee. $187.40
insurance duty.  $ 39.70
               total.   $624.10 and that's each year,the wife's car costs the same.

Sorry Russ but whatever we think of "revenue raising", there can NEVER be a reason for being illegal, you appear to be advocating not bothering to have insurance, not an attitude I can agree with.

My statement is based on my knowledge that most - if not all - unregistered cars do not have insurance.

If you are hit by an uninsured driver - as I was once upon a time - you have to get the repairs done on your own insurance - lose your no claims bonus and face a premium hike at renewal.

Even worse - if an uninsured driver maims or kills someone they have no financial redress.

I have no time for the scumbags who drive uninsured - they are a menace to all of us who, in the UK, suffer premiums 30% higher to pay for uninsured and fraudulent claims.

Really? 30% higher, that's a lot. No wonder you are unhappy.  I do wonder though... if people are uninsured they don't have to pay? Sounds too good to be true, surely!

Insurance always seemed to be one of those communist socialist ideas where everyone contributes to a pool to help the individual in need. A good idea really but one that should never have been put into private enterprise. Some of the ideals are lost in the execution.

There's only the one...TAC (Transport Accident Commission)
And even someone on a bicycle is covered....

So the TAC (State Gov't owned) gets the premiums which come with your registration fee and use those to pay out any claims. Good stuff. But any claims made from an accident involving an unregistered vehicle are still paid from that same fund, to which the ar*ehole who hasn't registered their car hasn't contributed. So, everyone else pays.

In the scheme of things the TAC premium he/she hasn't paid is just a drop in the ocean and as we've already got cyclists freeloading (as such) on the system a few more aren't gonna make that much difference, I guess.....
