I am noticing that my new i30 snicks its way....catches its way past mechanisms on its way from second into third. You feel like you are close to gruunching the gear. Has anyone heard of this problem. Mostly I can only get flawless entry by going from neutral into third. This means you cant make even a moderately fast change, without meeting the mechanisms.
I worry that there may be a synchro problem that will only get worse.
The dealership say there is nothing wrong with it and it doesnt happen when they have tried.
I am 57 , not some young kid.
Any thoughts folks.

I've not experienced that exact problem in 3 years of ownership. In the early weeks, though, gear shifting did cause my left bicep to expand a bit ;)
That said, however, my most recent service (60,000 mile/5 year) has seen a different feel now coming from the gearbox. I can only surmise they tightened up the gear linkages & clutch. At cold, I can barely find 1st and 2nd. Plus, when cold and idling in neutral she creeps forwards with clutch drag.
Once again, I'm sure time will cure that problem, as I'm sure it will cure yours :D

Which State are you in?.. Maybe we have a friendly Member with a similar car that can take a look and see how it compares with theirs...
My Crdi gearbox was a bit notchy in the lower gears for the first 5 to 10 thousand but not as bad as you are describing... My wife's new petrol CW has a beautiful gearchange (smooth as silk) :goodjob:

I had this problem between 1st and 2nd gear, I just go into gear a little slower now and it's fine. See if it helps going in a bit slower, if it is like mine in don't like fast changes.
Also if it's brand new, it may improve after it has worn in a bit. The dealership may not have noticed it, because the driver testing it may go through the gears at a slower pace.

My old Sante Fe used to "snick" between 1st and 2nd - just needed to be slightly slower on the change.
Get it looked at by all means, but it might just be a quirk of Hyundai's build quality. My old TR7v8 with the 5 speed box used to snick everytime in all gears (when I could hear it over the engine )

My 60 reg 1.6 crdi does this i think, its more of a graunching type noise & feels as if gear stick about to break.

My feel for the manual gear box is that gears 1, 2, 4 and 5 are good and kind of … normal. Third… I’m not sure what to make of it, seems like it does not want to go in without wanting to kind of hit something and reverse fills horribly flimsy and imprecise, like is only engaging only a few millimetres as opposed to a proper engagement. But… whatever, no need to split hairs until something actually does happen.

The Korean built ones are a lot better now.. Trish's late 2010 build CW has probably the smoothest gearchange i have ever experienced and I've had 26 cars over 35 years + driven countless other company cars of all types and many other cars as well.. Our Feb 2008 CRDi was notchy in 2nd and 3rd for the 1st 10,000kms but did improve a lot .. (never as good as the CW is now though.. straight out of the box :goodjob:)

That sounds like when the service was done they may have replaced the gear oil with a heavier grade, the car should not creep forwards in nuetral. Does it still do it when fully warmed up?

Nope. The oil was not changed, just checked, according to the chat I had with them.
It's still doing it when cold, to a slightly lesser extent tho...

Don't believe a word the work shop tells you, I have seen more than one apprentice drain oil instead of just checking the level on a service. This kind of thing will not be recorded on the receipt. :whistler:

i know exactly what you mean,most mechanics wouldn't check your oil levels before draining them. :disapp: once its been re filled who is the wiser on the fact the oil was down a liter before it was changed. :disapp: :rolleyes:

I notice exactly the same thing. My car was built in 2009, has now done about 14000 km, and is still the same in this regard as when I first got it as a dealer demonstrator. It does not seem to vary between when the gearbox is cold and when warmed up. The intriguing aspect I notice is that the synchro does not quite do its job when I change from 2nd to 3rd at my natural rate, but if I pause a little longer in neutral, it is OK, and if I push it really fast with no pause in neutral, it works OK as well! It is also OK on changes from 4th to 3rd. Other forward gears are OK.
It does not trouble me enough to complain to the dealer, particularly after some of the stories I have read about dealer service departments. I would rather they not dismantle my gearbox for such a minor problem and risk making something else worse as a result.

Yeah same here low gears were a little snicky for the first 6/8 mths.... You'll soon have it run in a settled down.
Oh and don't worry about being 57, sounds like you have a couple of years left in ya yet :rofl: :rofl:
