Hi All

I am looking for some help. My 2010 1.6CRDI has a "rasping" noise when the turbo spools. I have had it pressure tested and there's no leak in the intercooler pipes. The Stealer I bought it from (Evans Halshaw) had it for a week and replaced the turbo under warranty but there's no change to the noise. Once the turbo is no longer spooling or you lift of  the accelerator the noise stops. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Welcome "Hoss"

Dazz from the "Ponderosa" here (In house joke)

If it is or was the Turbo making the noise and the noise hasn't changed then I doubt very much they actually swapped it.

If it is making a rasping noise I would suspect a damaged fin or fins (or some build up of burnt oil or something maybe)

Now I could be wrong, but I seldom admit it!  :whistler:

Hi Dazz

Thanks for the speedy reply. I have checked, and had checked by another mechanic, that they fitted a new turbo and it certainly new. Do you know if there's any kind of diverter valve on these engines. I read a couple of posts from VW forum which sounded like the same issue and they mentioned a diverter valve. I did also think it could be an exhaust manifold leak.

Not sure about the diverter valve but there is something the guys talk about blanking off? Yes, I guess an exhaust manifold leak could make a sort of rasping noise under acceleration. Mind you I'm no mechanic (even though some call me the Boss around here)

It will be a VW blow valve for petrol motor- not on your car!

Appears the car runs ok so-
The rasping sound could be pressure escaping post the turbo.
I would search the large rubber hoses  leading from turbo to  the inter cooler.
Look for Cuts or fractures, loose clamps, leak in the inter cooler.
