So what is the next step?  :undecided: :disapp:

You wouldn't want that... When i was much younger my big Brother got me to help him in his Auto Electrical business once. I had to unbolt an Alternator. He said whatever you do, don't shear off any of the bolts ... Not telling you what happened.. :Pout: :-[

Do they have sheep in Tassie? maybe stick to them.

how do you shear of a bolt? Turning the wrong way?

I'm really frustrated ATM. I can tap out 7mm but don't have a 7mm x 1 tool for this rig. I will need to make one with someone elses tools. 7mm is really the limit, may even be too big. 8mm would take out the whole body .

If only i knew that tap was wrong it'd be out like the other

here's another kit and another video. They're also very similar in process. I have not watched it all yet but .

Step 1 shearing the Head of (see Dazz, perfect)
Step 2, I never drilled the electrode, vice grips and a twist will have it snap off in one piece
Step  3.  I drilled out the thread.
Step 4  clean out and retap the 10 x 1.25 plug thread

Dunno. Usually you remember the monumental ones. I could tell you how to set your VH commodore on fire whilst working on it.

yeah, in a perfect virtual world. Still , although this kit is not perfect, the foundation is there just would have been nice to be more aware of the pitfalls.

The point on the reamer is interesting...

A year or so ago I rang a few very well established businesses that service only diesel engines...without exception they admitted that they had never heard of a reamer to remove accumulated carbon deposits.

Yeah, well. There's a probably some well established dealerships that potentially  are questionable on knowledge or practices.

C'mon. Glad you're not my tech advisor. Was not perfect at all. :spitty:

Got one out.

Actually mate, the last clip is a good one, albeit that they had an ideal situation with glow plugs at front of the motor.  :)

Allow me to check the transcripts.

And you're out of context. "perfect motor" got nothing to do with the method of plug extraction. :blubber:

Damn you

"Ive always been lucky with glow plugs, usually  wd40 them a week or two ahead of surgery. If you can get some  heat from Oxy onto them, that should help. "

pretty sure I'd already done the damage, did not save the sent question.

No contest your Honour. :snigger:

Final report in.

It's out, ... the glow plug that is not the report.

7mm is too big really to tap this out . Took 3 goes lucky really.

What I did , I had to make an interim puller. Got some 8mm x 1.25 threaded rod. Cut a piece the same length as the extractor. Ground the lower half away. Then used a M7 x 1 die to cut the rod. Tapped the core of the plug with M7 x 1.

The rod was not perfectly straight and mild steel. First attempt the puller started to lay over and bend.

It will not pull out at any offset angle.

Straightened it best I could , try again and partially move but un threaded itself, re-tapped the plug nad had to use a locking nut the secure the rod so I could get it in as tight as I could.

Nice and straight and then lovely creaking cracking noises until it was fully extracted.

6mm is better, plus it give more wiggle room. Issues I had was it has to be perfectly straight, the adaptor did not pull up flush so I had a  spacer from a child seat anchor. Mainly due to the head and it's contours just getting in the way.

the EGR I pulled off, and an engine lift bracket in the corner.

Some serious gum in the hole. WD40 certainly helped soften this crap up.

I'll put up all the corrections needed to this kit to make it more useable shortly.

Wow,  have been following this from the start,  but,  went back and re-read.
If I  buy a diesel and it needs new glow plugs, then that will be a job for my trusted mechanic !!
Not going there  :crazy1:

The topic has been raised before, and members have had their plugs changed by a mechanic for about $350, and with no problems.

To be fair to Gerard, he accomplished a tough job ( we have been stirring each other a bit ) He took on a challenging motor because it had an unknown history and high Kms and his extraction kit (with no instructions) was some rubbish Chinese clone of a quality Euro/ US kit :spitty:.

Oh yeah difficult job for sure.
I know my mechanical abilities,  and am sure that if I tried to do it,  all bolts and other sharp edges would end up protected by a layer or 2 of skin. 😡

I'll say this too. Look for warning signs like and brown residue or varnish that appears around the glow plug or looks like it has run down the cylinder head.

Both of these had very visible signs of the the 2 that came out perfect and clean like brand new glows had no such stains.

It's obvious in hindsight what's been going on as these must not have been seated and sealing correctly.

If this motor was in a car I needed tomorrow  I doubt I would have touched it.  Being out of the car  made this a lot easier.

Gary.

Why do I need a disclaimer?

I'm pretty sure Gary was joking, but doesn't hurt to cover your a$$ these days. Somebody might copy your fine example then slag off at you if it all goes pear shaped! :winker:

Same reason WE ALL need a disclaimer at home. Gonna be blamed for every mishap even if you aint there.
