ESP OFF keeps lighting up.
« May 27, 2017, 20:47:46 »
My partner has a 2010 2.0 auto, she informed me that the ESP OFF keeps lighting up. I checked this forum and on it's advise checked the tyre pressure, thought I would test the brake light switch. I  then noticed the rear brake lights don't light up, the high stop LED one does. To me this suggested there was something wrong with the switch. I thought how difficult can a switch with 4 contacts be, and chopped a whole in the side,  I then noted lots of surface mount components, so obviously does more than switch the brake lights on and off.
I fitted a new one I got on ebay, and this made no difference. I think I read something about there being a difference between the switch on cars with cruise control, this car has cruise control. I ordered another switch from the local Hyundai dealer that supplied the car (actually only about 30% more than ebay) however to my disappointment this switch was identical, and the fault persists, possibly even worse now it appear the ESP OFF light won't go off at all. Is there  likely to be a difference between the switches for a car with cruise control and one without? Any other ideas? I assume a relay is involved but don't know which one?
Thanks for any help.
Kind regards

Angus

First thing I will say is there is a recall on the brake switch and known to cause ESP fault. Mine was replaced free as the 3rd owner and completely out of warranty under the recall by a dealer. I has intermittent esp fault, been fine since.

I'm also thinking if you have replaced switch, has it been adjusted corectly? pretty sure you just can't remove, replace. The plunger would need to be setup .

What is the vin?

Thanks for the info:
VIN KMHDC81EMBU087936
Tested the switch as per your diagram and it tests as good.

Thanks again

Not having luck finding the switch in the diagrams. I'll throw the vin in but I've spent the last hour looking to find it.

If it functions correctly and adjusted correctly and you've taken it for a drive but still does not clear after cycling the ignition then I'm out of ideas and time to get it looked at by the dealer.

If the stop light s were faulty chances are it was that switch and should be covered for free. Could act dumb and if the car has not had the recall performed, you may get away with them looking at it and be sure it's set correctly.

If the fault reamins then They would probably have an idea too what is wrong so free diagnostic. Part of replacing the part is confirming all is ok. Don't know how NZ works for recalls but @nzenigma may know more

can't find it, I'm worn out from RSI.

You have the original and chances are it had the part number on the case. This may have been updated if a revised version has been made to correct a fault

Chances are the Cruise control model has 4 pins, non cruise has 2 pins.

Oh and it was a service campaign here, not safety recall but my car was a 2008 and it was replaced free last year.

Hi guys, MODIFIED POST.
Angus I think you POSSIBLY have two faults.

BUT THE BRAKE SWITCH HAS A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE ABS, SO EXPLORE THE BRAKE CIRCUIT FIRST
the faulty brake switch was used in all the Hyundai models around this era. The ones I have used have the brake and cruise switching. The plugs are different to suit the car.
I haven't got a cct. diagram with me but, If the LED is coming on, the switch is ok, you probably have a wire open circuit or blown fuse going to the brake lights. You should have 12v +ve to one side of the brake switch. Same on the centre terminal of each brake lamp ( pedal is pressed)

If the steering is not centred the ESP will not act correctly. So it could be tyre inflation, wheel alignment  or a  steering column sensor . It can be checked and reset by a good workshop, no need to go to a dealer. Quick job.

If it's classed as Australian market why is the aircon rubbish? or is that just peculiar to this car, apparently the heater is not that great either, which may be an Australian spec!
My partner booked it in with the dealer today, they checked the rego number and said it had been recalled in 2013 for the brake light switch fault and that this had been sorted. If it ever stops raining I will check all the fuses, thanks for all your help, will let you know how I get on.

yep, mine runs at 2 deg C at the vent. You probably need a regas. The A/c should be used occasionally to keep it up to spec.
Not just on the one warm day a year, per Lyttelton climate. :P

No issues with either of my A/C units or heater. Only complaint is it should have centre mounted rear vents

Once again thanks for all your suggestions.
It has now been sorted out by the Hyundai dealer.
They replaced two brake light bulbs.
I find this really strange, pulling all the bulbs and testing them with a meter and then a 12v PSU just to be sure, was the first thing I did.
The car has experienced some weird electrical lighting faults before i.e. park lights intermittent. I think it is Christchurch's earthquake ravaged roads.
Apparently tyres and shock absorbers are hot sellers.
Good to have it fixed.

My ESP OFF light has started randomly turning on mid-drive and can't be cleared until the next ignition. I'd better check whether the brake lights are actually coming on.
