  • the older I get, the faster I was
hi all
for a couple of weeks now, I have a very slight whining noise and a very light vibration felt in the steering wheel.
this happens only above 80 kph, so I thought it was something rubbing against the wheel.
a few days ago, the engine belt started to "scream" slightly when engine started with AC on.
so I took a close look at the belt.
the belt is far from new but seems in a fair condition.
one of the pulley wheels have a free play, see the pic.
so I guess this pulley is the cause.
anybody have the pn for this pulley wheel? early 2010, 126hp engine CW.
what is the correct belt tension and how can I set/test it without any special tools?
for the Ducati engines, you can set the correct belt tension by using 7 and 8 mm ellen keys.  the 7 is a go and the 8 in NoGo when pushed between the belt and the tensioner .

Kinda curious how that causes vibration in the steering and above 80 Kmh. I would have thought it would be RPM related so why not a t lower speeds but same engine speed?

TW, I was thinking the same as you. tried to drive in a lower gear but I don't know why, only above 80 kph the noise and vibration start.
I hope this is the root cause.
do you have also the pn of the belt? maybe its time to change it also.

A vin is handy to be sure but 252122B020 for aircon model, 6pk1255 or 1257 I see on some images

The other is shorter as you'd expect 252122B030, 6pk955 or 953

I searched the web to find out how to set the belt tension. all I could fins was that I have an automatic tensioner.
took another look today.
I don't have an auto tensioner, I have a manual tensioner that moves the alternator.
it was too easy to loosen the holding screw, so probably the tension lost a bit by time and vibration.
tightened the tension a bit, and now no more screaming belt.
as there are so many engine types and different types for different markets, I want to make sure that I buy the correct idler pulley.
took it off and measured it. I got 95mm diameter and 26mm wide.
I searched ebay and found that some sellers state 29mm and some 26mm for the same part number.
there was a number on the pulley on the inner side, but its probably a serial number, doesn't match anything, 51210204
the belt is worst, there are different lengths of belts for the same engine  :head_butt:
guess I will have to measure the length or go to a service and pay 3 times more for the correct part... :blubber:

That's why a VIN helps the parts program to narrow the field especially if there's running change like for example on the D4FB Diesels with the oil filters and also the water pump.

pretty obvious it's manual just looking at your image.

I'm feeling confident what i have will be it but will wait and see what you come back with

Found this an interesting item to be included in specification.
it defines the type of AC installed and other characteristics like injection and timing to adapt the engine to the environment.
there are several types of AC systems, each installed depends on the  geographical location.

I don't know everything you know , just reasonably good at digging up info.

will be alternates within their system? All the same legth or within a range. 1255 and 1257 I've seen  for length

No idea but the first number is genuine the others contain either all or part of that number. that's what it listed.

It's a belt , number of ribs  x length , pick your preferred brand and go. that's how I'd be searcing

while doing an oil change, I noticed sever wear on both front wheels inner shoulder.
done wheels alignment, and changed all 4 tires from the Chinese crap the car came with to Pirelli P1.
whining noise and the vibrations are gone.
car steering, handling and feedback is completely different.
this is what you get when you put on cheap Chinese tires (previous owner changed all 4 tires probably to hide the misalignment)
car quieter but not as quite as I would like it to be. couldn't find a quieter tire in size 185/65X15

this is how the cheap tires look after about 8000 km.

I don't think the brand is the problem, your alignment was obviously out which is what screwed your tyres.

the alignment screwed the tires, but between the alignment and tire change I drove about 500 km without any change.
only today, after changing the tires I felt the change.

Once you stuff a tyre with bad allignment there is no coming back. Even with proper allignment they will continue to wear the same way.
