OK - so my low fuel warning light in my i30 comes on at 50 miles. I am just wondering how low I could (or should) let the mileage drop if I am in the middle of nowhere ? How low have you all been ? Thanks peeps ! :goodjob:

My fuel light will come on when there is 80 to 100kms to go, then when down to 50kms left the fuel level bars will start flashing and at that point I have about 5 litres left in the tank.

Gauges will vary slightly so best to record how much fuel you are putting in at a certain point and that will tell what was remaining.

My tank was seldom allowed to get below half so as to avoid sucking shit thru the fuel line  :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

If the fuel pick up is at the bottom of the tank, how can it matter how much fuel is in there?

I didn't take the risk with my diesels - but with my last petrol Venga, the week before I traded it in, I put a can of petrol in the boot before setting out on a trip. The warning light had been on for 23 miles the previous day and the fuel gauge was on the first bar and flashing. The DTE was reading 28 miles.

I then ran the car until it stopped for lack of fuel, which was 44 miles later.

By the way - the car started OK after cranking for a short time.

Petrol or diesel car?

I ask because you should treat low fuel with ultra caution in a diesel.

Running out and filling with a diesel car you need to prime and manually pump filter.

With both petrol and diesel, be safe and refill once low fuel light comes on.

That said when I drove my wife's car to the dealer both fuel gages were flashing (it was LPG) it was on the last day of rego (I delayed getting the car for a couple of weeks) and the tyres were just legal......

Morning...I just came to query this.  So yesterday I was nudging 4km to empty.  Filled up and got 47lt.  Tank capacity is 50lt.

Got me thinking as to how far I could have gone once I hit 0km to empty.

Has anyone seen this experiment that Hamish & Andy did? :link: Living Dangerously: How Far Can You Drive On An Empty Fuel Tank

I'm too scared to see exactly how far I would get but....is it possible?

Something like that would have a bigger tank than an i30. I would suspect the i30 to have between 3 an 5 litres left when showing empty (as a safety margin) which is what your experience and others has shown. So maybe 40kms in a new petrol PD and 60 or 70 in a diesel.

When I had my FD I think I got over 50 kms after the dashes came up.
