Hello guys,
I have a hyundai i30 from 2010. I bought it lest than 6 month ego. Lately, my gearbox is having issues. Every gear from 1 to 5 seems to be working properly. But gear 6 make wierd noises, like braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa (sorry, it not easy to explain noise with words). I went to machanica yesterday. He did some checks and talk me that gearbox is the problem.  But it is more expensive than my car (I bought the car 5500 Swiss Francs), a new gearbox cost 4500 swiss franc.

Does someone here knows where I could buy a used gearbox (second hand) and what could be the best price ?

Ps: I am in swiss.

Petrol or diesel car?

Manual or auto?

What speed are you at when it makes the noise.?

Could it be labouring as not travelling fast enough.

  • 1.4 Petrol Active I'm no expert, so please correct me if

Petrol or diesel car? Diesel

Manual or auto? Manual

What speed are you at when it makes the noise.? It does not depends on speed (but on gear number), it generaly  above 80 km/h

Could it be labouring as not travelling fast enough. It goes it goes normally except noise. There is not speed lost ...

Welcome,

Sorry to hear that.

Can't recall this fault being mentioned on here before.

Could be worth trying a Transmission specialist. It might be fixable at a fraction of the cost of a replacement.

Thinking same Dazz. The bigger question is does the mechanic know what it is? Can yo record the noise and upload it?

Is it a bearing issue?

If so surely someone has the ability to strip a manual box and repair it.

I've never stripped a manual box but There's only so many shafts and each usually has more than one gear on it so if it was bearing I'd expect it to be on more than one gear .

Or maybe it's a damage gear like a chipped tooth in which case they just replace that cog.

You can buy used gearbox in slovenia or austria for 500eur and change it for 100eur at independent garage. 4500CHF is probably cost of a brand new box. In your case 6 th gear bearing is probably faulty due lack of lubrication. Was car ever been in accident?

Got a question because I just gotta know, the gears share shafts so if the 6th gear bearing failed would you hear it in other gears or is it more localised and dependant on the load on the shaft at that point when it's in 6th?

Interesting none the same, I've lost a gear gear once, and I've heard noisy bearing rumble on input shaft, and that's about it.

So is this a common failure in the 6 speeders

In case of input shaft bearing. You will hear noise in all gears untill you press the clutch. Probably noise will be louder when braking with engine or changing gears.

Thank for your answer. The car has no accident. But one of my friend told me that it is probable because I use 6th gear too much in low speed. That is why 6th gear stem it is broken.  Can you please give a link where I can buy online ?
