After scrapping the bent Accent and stripping the XD Elantra drivetrain and electronics i've got the base for the build i have been trying to accomplish for years.

1997 X3 Excel 1.5 SOHC Alpha 5-speed M/T.

Went down to Bathurst 2 weeks ago to pick it and another one up my fellow Hyundai Tech mate is keeping to build for himself.

There are also another 2 to retrieve, was leaving tonight to get them but i got called in to do my first shift at my new 2nd job so couldn't call that off lol. We will go get the other two in a couple of months.

Plan is to get it driving and registered as standard 1.5 then do the Beta 2lt swap i've been dreaming of doing for however long its been now.

That's one way to get an excel across the line at Bathurst. I guess stage 3 will be the installation of KERS?

Got out to Mum & Dads yesterday, where the Excel is temporarily stored. It's 1/2 hr out of town so not too easy.
Got to have a semi-decent look over it and took my spare Accent rear struts and fitted them.
Body work is not brilliant but in no way is it wrecked. Just lots of spots to learn dent repairs. Bonnet is throw away and maybe LH door.
Interior is surprisingly good though. A few missing pieces and one crack in dash (very hard to find any without cracks) so I'm very happy.
Next I'll swap the Accent front struts in and re-assemble front brakes, then put the injectors and sensors back on the engine and get it running.

Would love to get into the Excel Cup. I'm too far away to be able to join in though, that and costs.

I just want to do Hillclimb events to start with and if I can afford to rego it I will drive it around surprising a lot boy racers 😝

Good video.

Love the understeer in the Cutting, the Chase and Murrays Corner.

Just wind on more lock and keep the boot in.

Shattered I can't see any of your pics!

I loved my X3 Excel. If only you were looking for one 3 years ago you could of pretty much had mine for nothing. DOHC 1.5 GX with power windows and full cloth trim!

My uncle owned a panel beaters and had 10 dead Excel's he let me salvage parts from.

It was by far the best car I ever owned. Cost me $3k with 200,000km back in 2005 and gave that car hell. The body was straight  with no dents, the bonnet was the only issue with one of my friends sitting on it. Sold it off with 300,000km and just checked Vic roads and the beast still has a current rego that was renewed  a month ago.

Simple car, that would just keep going if maintained. Still reckon the Alpha and Beta motors were Hyundai's best engines. Just unbreakable.

Yeah Photobucket has changed their free hosting privileges.

It's not alot to look at but race cars don't need to be. Probably going to be pushed back a bit with the arrival of the Tiburon. But still a build i want to do.

You would have to re-upload the original photos to a new host like imgur then copy/paste the links through modify for each post.
