Hi guys,
Being a proud owner of a 2015 i30 1.6 crdi DCT , I am really disappointed with how things have turned out. After almost 3 years of ownership
(bought my car new on January 2016) and 77000 km on the clock, my clutch needs replacement as Hyundai service has informed me.
It all started when I noticed some rough accelerations from a stop and some "kicking" of the car when cruising in highway speeds or slightly
accelerating.
I don't tend to push the car nor do hard accelerations from stop, but I am certain that the dragging in second gear when in town traffic sure has something to do with it.
When I talked with the mechanic from Hyundai, he told me that this is a problem they face all the time with the dual clutch transmission on the tuscon and i30.
The car has 5 years warranty so obviously they are going to replace it for free, but what is bugging me is the obvious chance that this may as well happen again afterwards and when the car is not still in warranty.
I just wanted to share my experience here and see if anyone else has faced this issue with their DCT, and for the more experienced and knowledgeable users, how big is the chance of the clutch needing replacement again?

Sorry to hear that. A couple of positives though.
If a conventional clutch (in a manual) had gone after 3 years it generally would have been considered as wear and tear and not been covered.
They have continued to tweak the DCT since first implemented and so hopefully the replacement and later model ones are more robust.
Try to be mindful of creeping in slow traffic in future and minimise doing that. Warnings about doing that with DCT were probably not as prevalent when your model was released. :cool:

One of the advantages of the Hyundai Ioniq and other Hyundai/KIA hybrid cars with DCT transmissions is that creeping in traffic and pulling away from a standing start is by the electric motor - the engine is started and synchronised with the cars speed before its clutch is engaged with minimal slip.
This is of course no consolation to the OP - but Dazz is right - current DCT clutches are almost certainly more robust.

Hi Chris , that is not good, I thought that trans used two clutch?
also has it ever had the trans fluid changed or trans serviced?
I can't see how that would help , but on the normal auto trans I can help if the trans oil temps get too high, need to service & change fluid every 20 to 25k km's. trans coolers help. but with the DCT have no experience, but still a thought.

:crazy1: This sounds as much a manufacturer's excuse for bad design as it is a warning.
For decades, we have had manual and auto transmissions that are not troubled by creeping traffic. In fact the fluid drive auto is ideal for city traffic.
I also note that high torque cars are using a wet clutch transmission.

I know it is not related to I30 as such - yet on my old Subaru Forester - clutch replacement is like every 5 years for the car due to wear and tear and cost me around 1k - 1.5 k - well that is my experience though.
I wonder how much it would cost to replace clutch on a DCT I30

Without wanting to go against the advice of the mecanic.
Do you think if the problem was as wide spread as he says, that we would have heard more about it by now?

There has been some issues with the DCT in the Tucson in the USA. They've swapped to an 8 speed conventional auto now I believe. But mostly good so far in Australia with Tucson and i30 in Australia.

Tim is keeping a low profile but does respond to a few posts on our Facebook page. I'm sure some of them have been protective of the reputation of the DCT. He had enough confidence in them to buy a DCT SR for his wife (although he also has a Jeep) :crazy1:

Not sure if it is in the first or the 2nd video i've linked to in that thread (or both) where he explains the creeping issue.
I think it would be like anything, a little bit of riding the clutch (in a manual car) or creeping (in a DCT) should be fine it is just doing it too often or for too long particularly on a gradient that does the damage. For example if I stop on a hill I select AUto hold rather than sit there riding the accelerator. :cool:

Good news - being fixed WITHOUT argument and for FREE. Obviously there are some batches that have issues.
Check warranty time on replacement clutch, ENSURE it is listed on history as replaced as faulty.
If it happens again you have precedent.

Bad news -clutch has a FAULT.
Good news - being fixed WITHOUT argument and for FREE. Obviously there are some batches that have issues.
Check warranty time on replacement clutch, ENSURE it is listed on history as replaced as faulty.
If it happens again you have precedent.

- I do try but unfortunatelly my wife drives the car on weekdays to work and I use it mostly on weekends so even if I explain it to her I dont think she will really care :D

- it was going to be changed and serviced on the next service as the dealership informed me at the last service

- in Cyprus we dont have such big distances (limassol to nicosia for example is 80km) and probably most users are city drivers where we have a lot of traffic - that is as much as I can make from it.

- i called the dealership and they told me that they will replace it for free but the warranty will only be until the end of the 5 years of the car's warranty - they wont give me warranty on the clutch because they will change it for free. Sounds really stupid to me, they said that if it was paid they can give me warranty on it because Hyundai will ask for the invoice when its due for replacement. Also they said the warranty on a replacement part is only 2 years which I find hard to believe.

I had watched him before, (as best I could - jeezz he rats on :rolleyes:) but fast forwarded him again and found his so-called mechanical review.
In the case of clutch wear it is of no valuable, in fact at 10,000km, any car is going to look superb. All he said was that the brake pads showed little to no wear. May be something I missed. He seemed more intent on telling us something we already know, the VW and Ford DCT have major dramas and Hyundai DCT is a different design.

Has anyone thought about the cost of DCT clutch replacement if not covered by warranty?
Maybe its quite cheap??
But certainly far more complex than the manual gearbox clutch replacement.
Edit: online motor mouths cite: 1 $800 for a Ford clutch pack, part only, no labour. ..he heard!
2 BMW owner was quoted $8000 by dealer to do the job...he said!
