Title: Any particular Australian diesel fuel tangibly superior?
Post by: guest12451 on August 08, 2019, 11:44:26
Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has been able to find a particular reason to use a certain brand &/or variety of diesel fuel in Australia?

Seems they've all been ultra low sulfur since 2009 - and there's a whole marketing beat up about 'premium' diesel - which appears to be just that:
Premium Diesel Fuel myth (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiPgYDOivPjAhUEWysKHau9BdcQFjACegQIDhAH&url=https%3A%2F%2Fautoexpert.com.au%2Fposts%2Fthe-truth-about-premium-diesel-fuel&usg=AOvVaw1mv9kgPCF8K39vgfLp2BRD)

So I dunno it seems like they're all much of a muchness - as always some folks swear a certain brand works better, though I suspect this is often a very big placebo affect unless they're able to repeat with different fuel and everything else identical.

That said I'm new to the diesel game so if there's a certain juice thats better  (or really sucks!) - please let me know and why.

Thanks in advance.

When I bought Firty I was advised by the dealer to stick with BP, considered premium. Other members swear by other premium brands.

I decided that volume was more important than name and switched to Costco with my Adelaide membership, always sourced from the lowest retailer but always attracting queues at its unbeatable retail price.

My rationale has been that Diesel fuel in Australia is all good and that getting it from frequently emptied and refilled tanks avoids stale, bug ridden fuel ... and did I mention the price? :D

In my Diesel car a Ford Everest and our past Diesels Ford Fiesta, Mazda 6, Mazda BT50 and a Hyundai SantaFe I only ever bought/buy from BP or Caltex as they are the most convenient for me. I occasionally buy Mobil  but never use Shell as all of my cars especially the Everest are very noisy (injector clack) with shell.  I buy BP truck Diesel most times as it's 2 cents per litre cheaper and performs the same as their "premium" as far as economy goes there is no difference between Caltex or BP. I did use a local independent for 2 months at one stage but my fuel filter was absolutely filthy compared to past and post changes.

I have bought the cheapest rubbish available all the time - even so called 'truck diesel' and after 100,000km of ownership haven't had an issue.

I bought it second had with around 120,000km on it.  Changed the fuel filter only a few weeks ago and my mechanic noted how clean it was and how little crud came out of it.

Interesting feedback.  Thanks!  :victory:
