Title: Solar Deal - Is this the right time?
Post by: The Gonz on January 11, 2019, 08:17:33
TV says 24 ZN Shine panels + 5kW inverter to catch 2018 rebate this month for $3681 (Adelaide). Not having researched lately, I ask of the experts: is this a deal I should get?

Price seems very good for a 5Kw system. 24 Panels? I thought they used minimum 300 watt panels now? I know they sometimes "over drive" the Inverter for efficiency but 250 x 24 =6Kw and 300 x 24 = 7.2 Kw seems a bit excessive.

Who is the supplier? The panels get a reasonable wrap.

Thanks, Dazz. Arise Solar are doing the ads and do cite 6.3 kW of panels (18 + 6 extra).

They seem to get quite good reviews. I love Solar. It has been "money for jam" for us...

I wouldn't have a problem with that many panels. All it does it ensure your inverter runs to max for longer. It will run higher than 5kw anyway (and will probably actually have an output closer to 5.5kw).  So by throwing 6.5kw on the roof you will get a higher output all day, and max output of up to 5.5kw during peak, so you would assume that a 6kw system would go to at least 6.5 (probably higher) so 7.2 kw would not be a problem. They just serve to increase peak time. Also the sun would not be as intense in Radalaide as it is up here, and plenty are doing it up here.

Plenty are doing it, I wouldn't have an issue. My main interest would be what brand is the inverter. My two SMA inverters are still going strong, but Im sure they are others that are good.

Yeah,  overclocking the inverter is the normal.
Panels output varies as per conditions, so on cloudy, rainy days you get closer to what you expect from inverter. On good days, as beerman says output is at max rated or higher.
